Bidding

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jun 11, 2017 8:15 am

For OCI, If I got into a transfer school but am unsure if will attend (paid deposit though), should I bid at transfer school and also at old school (and then withdraw from one when I decide)

(Also waiting to hear back from other transfer schools)

If you are bidding many of the same firms in the same market then I would say no. I'm only going to speak for the market I know, which is Texas, and say that some firms here would probably notice what you were doing. I imagine most other markets would be somewhat similar (maybe not NY but I don't know). I would advise you to make your transfer decision asap so you don't have to worry about this weird situation that could potentially backfire.

I'm a 0L. Can you tell me what bidding is? I've heard about it before, but couldn't find anything.

You should get out of here, as you can't be helpful here. To answer your specific question - bidding is something that happens at OCI. Students rank some fixed number of the firms coming to OCI based on preference (for example, my school had 75 or so firms come to OCI, but we only got 20 bids). These are known as bids. Depending on how the school does its OCI (i.e. (i) blended lottery and pre-select, where firms get to select some students for interviews and the student automatically gets their interviews with their top 3-5 firms; or (ii) pure lottery, where the screening interviews a student gets interviews purely based on how they and other students bid firms).

Are the schools in separate markets, and will you bid the same/similar firms at both schools? If so, I'd say you should make your transfer decision and bid at the school you'll be at. Also, this assumes you are not obligated to make a transfer decision prior to the bid deadline.

If you read the links stickied in the legal employment forum they should have a lot of info. (However don't post there if you have questions, 0Ls aren't allowed to post questions in that forum or this one. Thanks.)
