Transferring out of T-14 School

Post by lawschoolstudent2019 » Wed Oct 12, 2016 5:48 pm

Hi,

I'm at a t-14 school and have thought about transferring down to another school (within top 20) for personal reasons. Does anyone know how this would be viewed by an admissions committee? other school is better focused on what type of law i want to pursue plus is close to family (and has a lower cost of living).

The family reasons, obviously, are completely valid - and i'm not going to be the one to challenge those. That said, I'd be leery of choosing a different law school based on a type of law you want to practice.

I don't think that a lower ranked school is likely to help you in any area of law. If it is worth is purely for personal reasons, then by all means make the switch. I don't think transferring should be very difficult as long as your grades are decent (i'd guess median-range or better).

Have you thought about being a visiting student at that school for a couple of semesters instead of transferring? I went to school with someone whose girlfriend was a visiting student 3L year for obvious personal reasons and to help relocate to the law school's city after graduation. If you're unhappy enough to consider transferring, you must have valid reasons. But transferring out of the T-14 might not be the best choice in the long-run of a career.
