Giving up on NYU/Columbia?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 25, 2016 9:28 pm

I think I'm going to throw in the towel at this point. Seems like it would be too hard to get OCI and housing in order in time for the start of classes. Anyone holding out hope?

Well, I just heard back from NYU on Thursday, and the deadline for OCI/EIW employer preference selections for transfer students isn't until 8/3, so there's still time. If you're coming from out of town, finding housing outside of student housing on such short notice would definitely be tricky, though. For Columbia, since OCI/EIP starts next Monday, it may very well be too late, but who knows?

Finding last minute housing in NYC isn't that difficult. Sublease, Airbnb, or a roomie situation can be ironed out within 1 or 2 days. Sabbaticalhomes.com is another great resource for short-term housing. I'm also sure that CLS and NYU have their own housing resources.

In terms of OCI, yeah. CLS without OCI is kind of lame. As miro pointed out, there is still time for NYU OCI.

ETA: I feel your pain. I'm waiting on NYU and CLS as well.

Just from the Columbia side of things, I mentioned this is another thread, but it seems worth mentioning here: Transfers to Columbia put in bids for EIP last Friday and interviews start next week on Thursday, the fourth of August. Transfer Orientation is a week from today, on the second of August. That is not to say that they are done accepting people, but those are some dates that may be helpful if you're on the fence. Although, it may be worth contacting them to find out if you are accepted now, after the bidding deadline, whether you can participate in EIP.

In terms of housing at Columbia, I applied for on-campus housing and they put me on a waitlist. They said that the on-campus housing supply is really limited, and what is available won't be available to move into until after classes start in September. So, people who were accepted earlier are in the same boat as people who have yet to be accepted in terms of on-campus housing. Ha ha ha.

From what I have seen, looking around the (off-campus) housing market in New York, there are definitely some options out there and a lot of them look like you can move in quickly. Most of what I have found is either available now or available for move-in on August 1st. I've unfortunately found AirBnB and hotels to be rather expensive, but if you're in a pinch and you need somewhere to be in time for EIP/classes, it may be the best option.
