Transfer to BU?

Post by OneKnownAsHal » Wed Jul 20, 2016 5:20 pm

Hello,
I am at a mid T2 school with full boat (huge mistake, would not repeat). I am admitted as a transfer into Boston University (currently rank 20). I have applied to both Michigan and NYU. I have not been rejected, but neither have I been accepted. My BU deadline to confirm is soon.

Should I confirm with BU?

Stats: Top 10%, probably top 5% or more but the school hides rankings and percentiles. 3.8 GPA. Wrote onto a Law Journal, graded onto Law Review.

Interests:
Biglaw, Public Interest, Clerkships, and anything with an international orientation if I miracle into it.
Preferred Locations: Boston and New York preferred.

Costs:
Full Boat at T2 (apart from costs of Living), but aside from maybe public defender and the one federal clerkship they sometimes get, not much I am likely interested in. Sticker for the next 2 years at all 3 other schools, but I may have lower costs of living at BU due to family and friends in the area. Cost is an issue because everything will be done via federal loans.

My leaning is towards pulling the trigger and accepting BU, rather than risk losing access to all possibilities.

Thank you for any thoughts.

I wouldn't transfer.

I don't think that transferring to BU guarantees you big law or employment, but you will graduate with over $100,000 in debt.

On the other hand, by staying at your current school, with top 5% and LR, you're in the running for big law and will graduate with no debt. You might strike out, but at least you'll have no debt, whereas if you strike out at BU then you're SOL.

I think that there is similar upside to staying at your current school with less risk/downside.

I had the exact same decision between my school (full ride) and Michigan. It sucks, but the option boiled down to accepting fewer/tougher opportunities at my current school with no debt vs. better employment and major debt at Michigan. I chose to remain at my current school, and I'm happy with that decision.

No one can give you a direct answer here - you'll have to make the choice that you're comfortable with accepting. Good luck!

+1

Also, Michigan's bidding for OCI is over so it would be an uphill battle to even get interviews.

BU's bid deadline might have passed as well. I'd call the Career Development Office and ask if you will be able to bid and what the process is like before you accept. I sure as shit wouldn't transfer to BU hoping for big law if you've missed OCI.
