Worth it to transfer to Michigan?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jun 13, 2016 8:52 pm

Would it be worth it to transfer from Wayne State to Michigan?

3.76 1L GPA. Career goal is Detroit big law. Am on Moot Court; decent shot at Law Review.

Is it worth it to give all that up and try and transfer?

Money is not an issue. Biggest thing is getting a Detroit big law job. Feel like I have equal shot at either place. Would it be worth it to try and transfer?

Honestly it really depends. I'm from the area as well, and have talked to a lot of attorney's at all the major firms there: Bodman, Honigman, Jaffe, Clark Hill, etc.

Feel free to DM me and we can talk about it

Since there are not very many Detroit Biglaw jobs, I presume you would do OCI at Michigan for Chicago/NY/other big cities. In that case undoubtedly worth it.

Really looking to stay in state, which makes me feel like Wayne would have a slight edge. From what I have seen, the Detroit big firms take small classes. One firm seems to have also taken only SAs from Michigan this year.

Any idea how a transfer would do at Michigan OCI?

I think staying at Wayne will be fine. If you blow Detroit interviews, being able to bid NY and Chicago won't help you get a job. Firms that will take you at michigan "median" require you to have an above average personality.

Forewarning, this is kind of unique advice e and I only say this because OP is a top 10% or better detroit biglaw candidate.

He/she has strong ties, LR, moot court, and good grades with 10+ firms that hire summers coming by for Oci.

For what it's worth, this guy transferred from Wayne State to Michigan back in his day. Things seem to have worked out . . .

Apply and cross that bridge when you get there.
