Nah, an app's not a waste at all. Just apply and see what happens.

I got rejected from Columbia with a fairly better class rank at one of those, but had a juvenile record for battery and possession with intent to sell and may not have had great LORs. I was never a great student and although I studied a lot, the professors didn't know that. I don't even think most of them linked the blind grading #'s to names so they would have no idea who I was. The LOR's important, because there's likely some correlation between developing great relationships with profs and doing well OCI - you're forming bonds in a competitive environment with limited interaction. It also suggests your performance wasn't based on luck.

It could also be they're only accepting people they know will come, because the #'s aren't relevant for transfer students so they might just not want to have to wait on you deciding to stay or go. The girlfriend thing could change that as could visiting, which would suggest you really do need to be in NY. I think within the t-14, it's more random. If you were top 10% at Fordham you'd be in no question, but from these schools it's unpredictable. There's too few applicants for data to be useful.

Looks good, but apply to both. Make sure to emphasize the need to be in the city, as that seems to weigh a bit in transfer acceptances.

Top 10% from Fordham is absolutely not automatically sufficient for transfer admission to Columbia. Someone top 10%, but outside top 5%, would be lucky to get in or have something else substantial in their application.
