Chance Me: T2 to T1

Post by sc04cbra » Tue Jun 07, 2016 2:27 pm

Currently a rising 2L at a school ranked in the 80-90 range. My University curves the median right at a 2.93-3.0. I tanked First semester with a 3.1 GPA (78/201; top 38%).I performed much better during my second semester, finishing with a 3.66 (within top 10%). My cumulative GPA is a 3.36. Ranks have not yet been provided, but It is a strong possibility that I am within the top 20% of my class.

I am not yet sure where I would like to transfer to, but I would like to attend an institution that will better help me land a job in a large city. I am currently considering Boston College, GWU, W&M, Emory, and Fordham. My current institution has poor employment rates; according to data collected by U.S. News, only about 40% of students land employment after graduation. Moreover, I am currently paying nearly sticker price; I have a 20% scholarship and qualify for another 20% under the Federal Work Study program. Thus, transferring to much better institution doesn't seem like too bad of an idea.

Any input (or any suggestions for universities to attend) is greatly appreciated.

Most of the people at those schools who get good jobs have distinguished themselves from the pack at those schools. It's not like the name is so strong that just having the name on the resume will open doors for you. You should really only transfer to a national school, a well regarded school in your home market or a well regarded school in the market your current school is in.

I'm not necessarily looking for a "good job" (which I assume means big law), but rather, I would simply enjoy working in a large city. More opportunities, better transportation options, faster pace, etc. Most firms that currently recruit from my University are from small cities/towns. Because these firms are from small cities/towns, they hire in limited numbers. The surrounding large cities (Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Knoxville, Nashville, etc..) recruit out of the better schools in my region (Vandy, Duke, UNC, Emory).

George Washington University and William and Mary for now. The deadline to apply for Fordham is July 15th (I believe); so, before I spend $110, ill be waiting until the last week. Where do you go to school?
