Should I transfer from my T4? What are my chances?
Hello everyone. I recently received my grades and was pleasantly surprised at my overall success. My question to all of you wise folks is: now what? I always dreamed of being in this situation but never expected to actually be here because of how unlikely it is to be at the top of the class. Anyway, on to my stats:
T3 in New York (100-125 range).
3.9 GPA; First semester was a 3.86, second semester was 3.93. Top 1-2%. Didn't book any class.
1 year W.E. pre-law school
Don't know if these even matter but, Non-URM. Pretty involved in my school in extracurriculars and what not.
PI for this summer.
What are my chances at YHS?
CCN?
Rest of 14?
I also have a full scholarship at my current school and love it here. I made a great group of friends, and couldn't have imagined being this comfortable this year. Should I even transfer?
Would love to clerk. Would love to teach. Shooting for BigLaw.
Help? Thank you in advance!

Would Georgetown give me better opportunities than I currently have? Would prefer to stay in New York for career.justonemoregame wrote:Georgetown Lock, no idea about the rest.

I'd transfer if you got in to Columbia or NYU. Aim for those. You have a good shot.Anonymous User wrote:Hello everyone. Pretty much no shot at HYS cause TTT. Sorry.
I'd just blanket apply any T14 that you're interested in going to and see what happens.

It depends what your odds of biglaw are from your current school. Usually the very top of the class from even poorly ranked NY schools can get biglaw, so it may not be worth it to transfer (and incur debt otherwise). Columbia, for example, is over $65K for tuition alone.
Assuming transferring is worth it, I'd apply to the T14 minus HYS (you have no chance) and Cornell (transfers can't participate at OCI). Whether or not Georgetown is worth it depends especially on how your current school places into biglaw. They have so many students (many of whom don't get jobs from OCI) and transfers probably do worse than the natives.

Re: Should I transfer from my T4? What are my chances?
My school has a BigLaw placement rate of about 10-20 students per year, but I know i'm not guaranteed a spot simply for being in the top few students but at the same time, I would regret leaving if I went to a different school and wasn't able to get BigLaw. Really not sure what to do here.n1o2c3a4c5h6e7t wrote:It depends what your odds of biglaw are from your current school. If there is anyone who was in my position in the past, I would really appreciate being able to speak to someone to get a better understanding of what transferring has to offer.

Is there really 0 chance at HYS? Not even a slim chance for H? Is it really not worth throwing out an application?eyeofvigilence wrote:I'd transfer if you got in to Columbia or NYU. Aim for those. You can google the H 509's and take a look at whether they've taken anyone from your school lately. I'd say very long shot, especially if not #1.Anonymous User wrote:Is there really 0 chance at HYS? No transfers from my school on the 509. And I'm not number 1, but top 3.
If I transfer i'll only have to pay tuition, living expenses including rent would be taken care of.
What about transferring to a Cali school if I want to work in New York BigLaw?

I think HYS CCN will be hard. My best friend was number 5 in his class at a top 50. He didn't get any CCN but ended up going to B.

Re: Should I transfer from my T4? What are my chances?
Biglaw placement from the TTTs of NYC are really random and hard to handicap. And even if you don't land a biglaw spot, you have a better shot at a high-paying midlaw firm from one of the T14. I say apply to the T-14 across the board (excluding HYS) and see where you get in. Trading up from Pace, Hofstra or NYLS (whichever of those three you're at) to Fordham wouldn't make sense in my not-humble opinion. But moving from one of those to the T-14 will send you down an entirely different career track. I'm a TTTT grad about 8 years out and it took me a very long time to get to a place where I'm at a solid midlaw firm with grads from primarily T14/T30 and solid regional schools. Skip the long and windy road I had to walk and trade up now. You won't regret it - even if you miss biglaw and place into a solid mid-sized firm.
