2016 Fall USC JD Freshman Looking for A Transfer Partner
(I hope the following words would not be silly and I’m open to any advice related to them)
Hi, nice to meet you guys!
Allow me to introduce myself first, I’m Lee, an international applicant of 2016 Fall J.D program and I decided to go to USC this fall since it offered me a scholarship that almost covered the whole tuition fee of the entire program. Having said that, I’m actually not that happy about this result since I just took LSAT test once (the result is 165) in the last October and just prepared for like half a year with a busy full-time job, and I planned to take 3 tests in a row and try to go to a top school in 2017 Fall since I personally think my CV and recommendation letters are all far from normal.
However, my parents strongly advised me to apply this year (they said, ‘just try it this year, it won’t hurt’) and when I told them that I was refused or be placed on the WL of all the T14 but received certain full-tuition scholarships from T20 law schools, I can tell that they really want me to accept them (I can understand them, I mean, they have the budget to support me even I do not receive any scholarship, but, a full-tuition offer is indeed tempting). Anyway, finally, I chose to go to USC Gould this fall. But again, like I said, I’m not that happy about this result, so, here I am, looking for some future classmates who also want to transfer in the 1L and I sincerely hope to work together with you in the coming 1L.
Here are two advantages that I personally think I could share with you if you are the one:
First of all, I’m an experienced legal practitioner with 3-year legal research experience and 2-year legal consultant experience in my own country, and I also have a degree of llm with merit in a famous U.K law school. I’m not saying I might be a expert of law school exams and not nervous about the coming 1L, but at least I think I could share you a lot of valued things and learning skills that you might not know until you finish your 1L (which is kind of late).
Secondly, I have unique academic resource stemming from my past research experience and I would like to share it with you if I think you might be the one that I could work with in the coming 1L. These resources include but not limited to: material sharing, academic books sharing and textbooks sharing. That will also be helpful to you, particularly in economic sense.
And if you are interested and you also want to find someone to study as a group to hit a high ranking, I hope I can receive your message and I hope you could tell me something not in general but in detail: show me you’re not a free rider, you have good faith to corporate, and your determination to achieve more. And then, we could start our partnership as early as possible.
Sincerely,
Lee

I'm sure I won't be the last to say this, but retake and reapply. You should never go into law school with a transfer-or-bust mentality, and you should not matriculate if you are unhappy with where you've landed.

Dear Joscellin, thank you for your decent and straightforward advice, indeed, I thought quite a lot about retake and reapply, but, this decision is not that simple for me, particularly family concerns involved (my parents, my fiancee), so I gave up this option last month and promoised my family to go to US this fall. But, again, thank you for these words.Joscellin wrote:I'm sure I won't be the last to say this, but retake and reapply. Haha, like your humor, like I said, I know these words could be silly in someone's eyes and I indeed do not know the culture of this forums since I'm new here. Hope my words did not offend you.BNA wrote:This reads like a nigerian prince is about to scam us out of advice

First, it's highly unlikely that you would get a full-ride at a T20 but get rejected by every T14.Byeromance wrote:What do you mean? My friend, I'm a foreigner, would be kind to explain?eyeofvigilence wrote:Guaranteed troll.
Second, if you really want a roommate, this is a bad way to go about it. You're freaking us out man.
Third, this is fake. Stop trolling.

Well, I get your point, if you do not believe, that's fine. And to be frankly, I did not accept this result as you either when I receive full-ride from T20 but get refused by T14, maybe you just do not realize how hard for an international applicant to go to a top law school, our competition is not like yours. So, I do not have time to freak you or anyone think I'm funny, and I'm not fake at all. Thank you for teaching me the meaning of 'Trolling' anyway.eyeofvigilence wrote:First, it's highly unlikely that you would get a full-ride at a T20 but get rejected by every T14.Byeromance wrote:What do you mean? By the way, I'm just looking for someone to study with, not live with.eyeofvigilence wrote:First, it's highly unlikely that you would get a full-ride at a T20 but get rejected by every T14.Byeromance wrote:What do you mean? In any event, why do you want to study with a transfer student?

I interpreted the request as one seeking other incoming 1L's to USC to join some type of preliminary study group in order to, presumably, attempt to maximize this person's chance of doing well enough to be able to transfer.

Maybe you see my words in an extremely negative way, I think I'm looking for a mutual beneficial relationship of which team members could help each other.mornincounselor wrote:I interpreted the request as one seeking other incoming 1L's to USC to join some type of preliminary study group in order to, presumably, attempt to maximize this person's chance of doing well enough to be able to transfer.

Re: 2016 Fall USC JD Freshman Looking for A Transfer Partner
No negative connotations here. Hoping to maximize one's chance at transfer doesn't necessarily mean at the expense of another.
But, the entire exercise is silly. Firstly, these types of study groups are generally the most effective only during the final stretch of the semester where they allow groups to jointly complete practice questions in preparation for exams. To confer with another at the start of a semester has the potential to reinforce incorrect interpretations. Going to any law school with the goal of transferring is discouraged here because being able to transfer is such a rare thing. To plan for it before you receive a single grade (or sit in on a single US Law class) is putting the cart before an entire fleet of horses.
Your family doesn't have to deal with the consequences of not finding a job. As I understand it you are an international student? Very few legal employers in the US have systems in place to support international job seekers. The vast majority of these employers are the large firms. The large firm jobs are some of the most sought after legal jobs in the country. To waste a (presumably) very good GPA and strong application by not retaking the LSAT in order to satisfy the expectations of one's family is all too common of an occurrence here. But, you need to think about the raw numbers. A school like USC places something like 35% of it's graduates into these large firm positions. That's a one in three chance. I imagine it is even more difficult for an international student to receive such a job. Maybe a good estimate is 25% for a student like you.
You really ought to retake (as you had planned before you allowed your family's wants and expectations to drive you into making a suboptimal decision) as even an extra 2 points on this multiple choice test will open up schools where the percentage of students who receive large firm jobs every year is closer to 70 or 75 percent.
