Would transferring be worth it in my situation? Forum

I am a first year law student at a TTT. I finished fall semester in the Top 10%. My goal is big law (and maybe clerking for a year). I have a federal judicial internship lined up this summer, as well as a big law position (NOT SA-- I'm going to be a law clerk) V30 firm.

My question is: Instead of transferring, should I just try and utilize my summer position as a means of getting a 2L summer associate?

Also, assuming I do not return to the same firm, would other firms at fall OCI give me a "boost" because of the biglaw experience I'll have on my resume?

I know there is not spot on answer, but i am looking for advice, not a solid answer. I hope I have provided all that is required to get advice.

What's your cost of attendance?(Do you have a good scholarship?) How debt averse are you? How set on clerking and biglaw are you? Do you have preferences on where you want to practice? Is your school in that region?

OP here; no debt. Good scholarship and the help of family.

Pretty set on big law... almost certain.

Clerking is only something i have recently looked into. I still need to look into it more, but it is definitely something I will consider within the next two years. So I guess to answer your question: Not certain at all on clerking.

The office I will be at this summer is in the city I would like to practice in. My school is in a different, but nearby city.

I don't know what school you're at so I don't know the numbers. Art. III clerkships will be tough to get from a TTT but if your school has some alumni judges, it's a possibility.(but you'll need really strong credentials)

I don't know the difference between a law clerk and SA for biglaw purposes so I can't really opine on that. But, again, I can give you a general answer that biglaw will be tough from a TTT.(but that's without knowing your school's stats or the circumstances surrounding your summer employment)

Transferring can make biglaw more attainable because you'll have many more firms coming to your OCI. The only issue is that it may not make biglaw in the area you want to practice attainable.

Will your family be able to help you if you transfer? Because that's a lot of debt to take on.

The final question is what options you'll have as a transfer. I can't say. You might be able to get a t14 school but that's not a lock. I wouldn't transfer for a school outside the t14 but that's just me.(barring special circumstances)

I can only give you general advice here. Ultimately, it's a decision you have to make based on your own personal feelings and opinions. Gotta keep your grades up in the second semester and if you do decide to explore it, might as well apply if you can afford the application fees. Then, you'll have the opportunity to make the choice.

Final question: Do you like your 1L school?

I'd transfer cause top 10% at a TTT will get you a job, but it's unclear how good of a job it will be. It seems unlikely that it will be a big law job. Top 10% at a lot of TT won't even get you a biglaw.

I would also transfer. As top 10%, you should get in some good places. You probably won't get a scholarship at the new school though.

In general, I think it would just be easier to get biglaw if you transfer. It's not impossible where you're at (networking, luck, etc.); you'd just have a better chance at a higher school.
