Second-guessing transferring. Ending up with a 3.84ish at a TT (half scholly), ranked 5th, offers for three paid TA positions, RA position, a fellowship, and full-funding for my summer internship with a district court judge. At the moment, I'm trying to get more scholly money from my current school and sending out transfer apps to CLS and NYU. My goals are to clerk and do biglaw. Historically students ranked between 1-25 land V20 biglaw jobs and start working their post-grad with no debt. If I can get a full ride, is it really worth it to transfer and pay sticker at CLS or NYU to possibly end up with the same job I'll likely get from my current school?

sounds like you have a strong shot at biglaw where you are now.. that said, NYU/CLS will probably have more mobility if you want to teach later in your career or something like thatm27 wrote:Second-guessing transferring. True, but other than that, would 120K in debt and starting over be worth it?clshopeful wrote:sounds like you have a strong shot at biglaw where you are now.. that said, NYU/CLS will probably have more mobility if you want to teach later in your career or something like thatm27 wrote:Second-guessing transferring. good point. If you dont care much about prestige or teaching, I'd say you are in a perfect spot to fulfill your immediate career objective, and with the added scholarship money, you'll be able to profit instantly once you're employedm27 wrote:True, but other than that, would 120K in debt and starting over be worth it?clshopeful wrote:sounds like you have a strong shot at biglaw where you are now.. that said, NYU/CLS will probably have more mobility if you want to teach later in your career or something like thatm27 wrote:Second-guessing transferring. Deferred from Chicago ED? That's weird. Is it a really low T1? I feel like if you don't get Chi ED, you wouldn't get Harvard, but your grade is above their transfer gpa median so who knows. Can't hurt to apply.

Yes. You have a shot at H if your GPA remains around where it is now. Not a lock but you definitely have a shot. Especially if you end up at #1 or #2 in your class. However, where your school ranks in T1 will have some effect.CheddarArachnid wrote:So deferred from Chicago to RD. Top 5 at a T1 school... Do I have a shot at H? Have two grades back so far, moved my gpa up a little bit already. (3.97)
You should get in both. Stanford's decisions tend to come later than Harvard (a couple weeks IIRC) so be prepared for that. But Stanford also seems to give West Coast students a boost.(not that you need it)YungSlumLord wrote:4.0 GPA at Davis. 4 Witkin awards. Hoping for 9th Circuit clerkship and BigLaw in CA afterwards. 1 year of work experience before law school.
What are my odds of transferring to Harvard or Stanford? Not interested in Berkeley since I'm full ride here at Davis and not sure if it'd be worth paying sticker for Berkeley at this point.
I can't call anything a lock in the transfer game but I feel confident you'll get in both if you put an effort into your applications.

I definitely don't recommend insisting that your recommender do anything...ladybug1989 wrote:T4 trying to get into T14 (UCLA/USC).
I've got one LOR and waiting on one more. That Professor is out of the country and won't be back until June 7th. I've got the rest of my application in, including 2nd semester grades + rank. Can anyone tell me if I'd be greatly disadvantaged if I wait until June 7th, or should I email him and insist on getting it to me sooner? Also, I can get another professor to write me one, but the one I'm waiting on has written me a great recommendation in the past.
What should I do?

Hey! I would say wait. Send in your application and let them know that an additional letter is forthcoming.
Ucla told me over the phone they dont make decisions until the end of July and they dont make decisions on a rolling basis. So youre better off waiting and getting the best recommendation.
Whats your gpa?

So just to check with everyone, is H the only one of HYS that requires separate college certification forms? Y doesn't have their own form but wants dean's certificates, and S doesn't need either right?

Y has a form, it's page 8 or 9 of the application packet on their website (they- like Columbia- require every school attended, not just graduated from).PeanutsNJam wrote:So just to check with everyone, is H the only one of HYS that requires separate college certification forms? S doesn't seem to care about that.

I talked to S recently. They require a dean's certification if you're admitted.

Re: 2016 1L Transfer Thread
WIth 3 credits left to go, I am basically 100% sure my GPA will be 3.73 (if I get a B for last one) to 3.87 (A+ for last class). I am relatively sure I'll end up with an A, B+ at worst... putting my GPA right at 3.80-3.83. Should be good for top 2-5%.
70s school. Strong recommendation letters with a glaringly bad undergrad transcript (including a big study gap) that could be deal breaker (I almost got a diversity summer associate job but was told they couldn't overlook undergrad despite how strong my law school credentials and recommendations were).
I know Yale and Stanford are practically impossible. (they'll get my app but I expect nothing given my numbers anyway)
What are my chances like for Harvard (very long shot, I know), Columbia, NYU, UPenn, Chicago, and Georgetown? (pretty much in order of my preference).

Re: 2016 1L Transfer Thread
Has anyone else run into serious problems with getting their undergrad certs? It took me almost two weeks to finally get a hold of the correct person, and now they are telling me it will be 7-10 days before they "complete the inquiry" and can mail the certs. Is this normal? I'm worried that this will hold up my application.

Has anyone heard back from Notre Dame? I submitted my application a few days after the first of April when the application went live. I had my interview near the end of April and the status checker said it went into review on the 29th of April. The website says they can make a decison off of Fall grades does anybody know if they will hold to that or are they going to continue to hold my application hostage till they get my Spring grades?
