Need some clarification about transferring

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:37 pm

There are a few questions I have that I am struggling with in regards to transferring, which I would like to do.

I am top third at a 15-20, and am looking to transfer into the lower half of the t14, primarily because of location and where my family/connections are.

1. If I transfer, how will I fare in OCI? Will I have as good of a chance at biglaw? Are there any statistics in this regard?

2. How would my GPA at my 1L school affect me moving forward? Is it something that employers look at? Upon graduation at the second school, would my original GPA still be on my transcript, or placed on my resume? Or is it wiped from existence?

You're 1L grades will be the only thing employers look at for 2L OCI. So if you you were competitive for big law at your original school you will be competitive regardless of the transfer. Transferring will just give you a better opportunity to interview with more firms that wouldn't necessarily go to your old school. So if your are a good interviewer you will have better chances, but your grades are what they are. I'm not sure what happens after graduation though.

1. OCI is a crapshoot for most let alone transfers. Having said that good grades talk. You might not be WLRK material but should have some bites.

2. Resume advice I received is that you old GPA and school stay on until you graduate, then you can remove them. For OCI you only have grades from one school and the employer will see both the grades and the school.

My experience, I transferred from a T2 to the T14 in the same market. I think this played a large role in my OCI success. Besides bidding NYC (do it), you could look at which firms usually come to your old school OCI and bid those firms at your new school. If you have connections, network the hell out of those.
