WashU to T14
Hey guys, I wanted some advice.
I just got my 1st semester grades (3.82, which is between 10% and 15% based on my school's previous curves).
I receive 32k/yr but I want to transfer to Harvard, Columbia, Northwestern, or Stanford. The reason being, I feel that this move would greatly increase my chances of snagging Big Law and because of the prestige. Furthermore, I feel like my school has trouble doing well in markets I like (such as NYC or Chicago or DC).
Supposing that I perform similarly for the 2nd semester, would any of these transfers be possible and if so, how likely? Any advice and thoughts (including why I shouldn't) are much appreciated.

The exodus begins.
You should apply to:
GULC
NU
NYU
UChi
CLS
UVA and Stanford are black boxes and I think an app is wasted there

Maybe like 3. Unless you want to work in STL, there's no reason not to transfer if you can get into T6 and you want BigLaw, imokingpin101 wrote:Damn are there any top WUSTL students who don't want to transfer?

Re: WashU to T14
maybe 5%. people significantly below that got great biglaw gigs, of course, but striking out is pretty indiscriminate.Br3v wrote:What percentile at WUSTL is relatively NY Biglaw "secure"?Nebby wrote:Maybe like 3. Cornell is also a wasted app. I literally never heard back from them.Nebby wrote: UVA and Stanford are black boxes and I think an app is wasted there

Doesn't UVA only take like 1 transfer a year?

OP wants a school where the name is only one word. Knows he's not getting Yale.Brut wrote:what is up with your list
u want nyc so u have cls, but not nyu?
u want chi, so u have northwestern, but not uchi?
u want dc but don't have uva, where d.c. is the second-most common destination for grads?
and u put in an app to stanford, so i assume u want cali, but no berkeley? unless it's a prestige thing, but then u don't want yale?

tbh this is noticeable at firm receptions and if your nametag says "[school] law school" on it, you're bonedPeanutsNJam wrote: OP wants a school where the name is only one word. Knows he's not getting Yale.

Could you explain this? Do you mean that whoever remembered me at previous receptions will think of me negatively for transferring?PourMeTea wrote:tbh this is noticeable at firm receptions and if your nametag says "[school] law school" on it, you're bonedPeanutsNJam wrote: OP wants a school where the name is only one word. Given that so many wustl students at the top transfer, how should we interpret job numbers? If this didn't happen in such large numbers, would their biglaw numbers be significantly better?

Thanks, I wasn't considering that the class of 2017 had an unusual amount of transfers.Brut wrote:oci interviewers are generally given grade guidelinessox49 wrote:Given that so many wustl students at the top transfer, how should we interpret job numbers? ostensibly if it really was the case that a large percentage of top wustl ppl transferred out, it would lower the number of CBs offered at the more selective firms, lowering job numbers
current job placement numbers are c/o 2014
c/o 2014 matriculated in 2011, meaning their transfer cycle ended in 2012
wustl's 2012 509 indicates 18 transfers out
from this we can recalculate wustl's bl+fc, which i will do here, assuming the most favorable scenario for wustl for purposes of demonstration
that is, i'll assume 100% of the 18 transfers stayed and got bl/fc positions, and none of those jobs displaced positions for other wustl students
2014 bl/fc is 31.4%
with the transfers added back in, it's 35.9%
again, i gave wustl the rosiest scenario possible
i would take an educated guess and say that transfers out probably affect bl/fc by a couple of percentage points, but not enough to make a serious impact w/r/t choosing, unless one is truly on the fence
Is it easier to transfer for up from washu than for similarly ranked schools like gwu or nd? Or is it just that a lot of folks go there with the intent of moving up?

Would you be satisfied with Chicago? Ed seems like a good move if you are risk averse.

I haven't heard of anyone (out of 30? 40?) transfers who struck out at OCI.sublime wrote:

It probably isn't easier or harder to transfer from any of the WUSTL similar schools. I assume future living/ working scenarios have much more to do with it.sox49 wrote: Thanks, I wasn't considering that the class of 2017 had an unusual amount of transfers.

A top GWU student may not gain much at OCI by driving down the street and will still reside in DC.
However, a WUSTL student has to remain in St. Louis.
While a UT student most likely wants to remain in Texas, so they might not transfer at all.
ND — no idea.
Emory — maybe they love Atlanta.
