Transferring <10 spots up? Forum

Hello, I am currently at a #15-17 school.

Due to the nature of said schools, I am displaced from where I've grown up and my network in general--the east coast.

I hope to be able to transfer to a school like Penn, or even GULC, as DC is quite close to home.

$10k/yr scholly at current school so it isn't much I'll be leaving behind.

May I ask what you all think about what % of the class I'll need to be in order to have a shot at the lower half of the t14?

You'll still need pretty awesome grades, check back after you get your grades back and see how feasible it is.

My sense is that it has become easier to transfer over the past few years as schools are scrambling to find tuition dollars that don't hammer their medians. The basic strategy is to remain selective with first-year admissions, knowing that this will produce smaller first-year classes. Then make up the lost tuition with larger, less selective transfer classes. Not sure how far up this trend extends -- I'd look at the recent first-year and transfer class sizes at the schools you're interested in.

Transferring into the T13 from a T1 is the gulf. The schools will be of similar difficulty to get into, and yes you'll need strong grades. Georgetown is a little different since it accepts so many transfer students. For that you may be OK with top third or even a little below.

I suspect something like top 20% would do it. Maybe lower with a compelling story/softs.
