top 10% & law review in NYLS - transfer to Fordham?

Post by nyclawschool » Sun Jul 26, 2015 9:49 am

Hi everyone. I am going crazy over my dilemma and would like your input.

I finished my 1L in NYLS (part-time evening) in the top 10%, and got on the law review + half scholarship $$$. I like the school but I want to work in biglaw in corporate field (no, I am not going to drop out to seek another career). I got in Fordham as a 2L transfer (again, part-time devision), but obviously, I will have to pay full sticker and no law review, unless I miraculously get on through the write-on competition. Money is a big issue but I don't want to hurt my career prospects either. Is the transfer worth it? What would give me a better shot, NYLS + law review or Fordham without distinctions?

fordham obv has much better bl placement, but the real q is how transfers fare
posters in this thread say that transfers to fordham can't participate in oci
but u should rly corroborate that
u can still mass mail, and i'd much rather have fordham on cv
obv fordham has much better bl placement in general (37% vs <7%) but not sure how instructive those #s are for a transfer

also since ur corp nyls lr shouldn't be dispositive imo

also, either way u can't count on getting bl, so yea the debt is a big Q. can you calculate the difference debt at repayment

Fordham transfers don't do OCI. I was planning on transferring until I found out you can't participate as a transfer student.

Does that (no OCI participation) hold true for students who transfer into the part-time program at Fordham ?

I will have to check this, but I think part-time transfer students should be allowed to participate.

Thanks for your input. The difference will be about $90k extra at Fordham. Total debt at Fordham ~ $140K v. NYLS ~ $50K.
