Made Moot Court after bids were finalized - should I send an updated resume?
Hi all.
I'm a rising 2L who transferred this year and I just submitted all my bids for OCI. I found out after my bids had been finalized that I was selected for Moot Court at my previous law school.
I have talked to BigLaw lawyers who have said that an update would be appropriate, but several career counselors at my new school are adamantly against it because they see it as a relatively small change that would highly inconvenience the firms. They also said it was not likely to affect my chances at receiving a screening interview with any of the firms I bid on, so their suggestion was to wait to give my interviewers an updated copy of my resume at the interview itself.
Since most firms list "Moot Court preferred" as one of their hiring criterion, I am reluctant to believe that being selected for Moot Court (even at my old school) is too small of an update to send to firms reviewing my application. I understand that it would be a slight inconvenience for firms, but I also think that it wouldn't be wise to let them decide whether to select me for an interview based on a resume that doesn't reflect all of my accomplishments.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

I don't think firms actually care. Also, are you going to do moot court at your new school? If you were merely selected for a role and you will never actually compete, the line item is 100% useless. As it stands it is otherwise only 99.5% useless.
Edit: I did moot court and no one asked about it once at screener, callbakc, etc.

Thanks for the thought. That might weigh toward not inconveniencing the firms/not thinking this is a bigger deal than it is. I guess I got the impression that it was a big deal because of the "Moot Court preferred" language, but that's good to know.
Edit: Not sure of the relevance, but I do plan on doing Moot Court at my new school.

Maybe bring it up in interview if the screener seems to think it is something of note. And if your resume is really bare otherwise maybe n updated one at the actual interview wouldn't hurt. But it really, really doesn't matter for SA hiring purposes.

Yea but the "moot court preferred" language is there because they want people who are actually doing moot court. I might be misunderstanding you but you got on moot court at your old school, not the school you transferred to (yet). In that case, you're not going to be taking part in moot court at your old school so I just don't see a point in it.

Along with what he said, I think you could end up confusing them into thinking you're on at your new school. This won't be a pleasant thing to discuss in an interview.lawman84 wrote:Yea but the "moot court preferred" language is there because they want people who are actually doing moot court. I would send an updated resume to the firms which specifically stated "moot court preferred". The update is an indication of your interests & abilities that show that your interests & abilities match those of these law firms.
P.S. Read through your earlier posts & noticed that you transferred from Syracuse to GWU. Did you have a scholarship at Syracuse ? Did Syracuse offer any incentive to get you to stay ? Law review ? Please feel free to PM me with any info. that you'd like to share about your former law school. Thanks !
