GULC Waitlist Chances
Any insights into what GULC looks for in its waitlist candidates - ties to DC, WE, LoRs, Softs, etc.?
Seems like all the candidates with the top ranks (ex. 5-15%) got in EA or RD, so what is the criteria they look for in admitting people off the waitlist?
Also - does GULC have a quota per local school to admit for their transfer class like NYU/Columbia does for NYC schools?

I'm guessing it depends on the profile of the candidates who withdraw but any answers you get here are entirely conjecture. Just posting here to help feed the neurosis, good luck

Re: GULC Waitlist Chances
Previous years indicate a multi-tiered waitlist. Anyone else get a letter indicating "small group" language?
Also for admitted folks, when is the seat deposit due for you guys?

Re: GULC Waitlist Chances
OP here - no I didn't get a WL email with "small group." Letter was pretty generic. I'm skeptical of the "not ranked" aspect of the WL since they've done the two tiered WL for years now.
Seems like they've changed a lot of things with admissions this year (e.g., no status dates on status checkers).

I called Admissions and they said the wait list was not tiered as it has been in past years. It is also not grouped into "preferred," etc. as it is for 1L candidates.

Did they give any indication as to a timeline or how they are selecting off the WL.Ladylaw87 wrote:I called Admissions and they said the wait list was not tiered as it has been in past years. It is also not grouped into "preferred," etc. as it is for 1L candidates.

Fwiw, bidding for EIW closes today, so if you're admitted after today transferring to GULC probably isn't worth it. You'd still be able to pick up some interviews outside of the lottery, but not enough to make it worth it probably.

Is transferring really only worth it if you can do EIW? Can't you still do OCI? Sorry if I sound clueless. So it is probably unrealistic to get into Gtown and then get a biglaw job during the year? or so a government internship and try to get biglaw after 3L?

EIW is the main interviewing program with all of the firms.transfermesoftly wrote:Is transferring really only worth it if you can do EIW? Can't you still do OCI? Sorry if I sound clueless. And I mean, you're not randomly going to get a biglaw job during the year, considering firms finish hiring after this recruiting season. It's pretty unrealistic to think you can get biglaw outside of 2L fall recruiting from any school, since that's just how firms hire. Considering that the cost of attendance is $80k+/yr, I generally wouldn't think transferring after the bidding deadline makes sense versus staying at your old school unless you're paying sticker there as well and won't get any interviews.

Re: GULC Waitlist Chances
They were pretty vague about how they choose from the WL. They said they consistently re-evaluate the applicants as the admissions process continues. They look at if a student keeps in contact with them, LOCI's, softs, etc.
OCI and recruitment programs do not really matter if you're transferring to part-time. We don't have to worry about that process until spring next year. Also, many of the interviews are actually obtained privately and not through OCI. I wouldn't say you're doomed if you are full-time and transfer without participating in this year's OCI (although it would be better if you could).

Did your letter say that they would let you know the decision by July 30th at the latest as well?w7ldcard wrote:Did they give any indication as to a timeline or how they are selecting off the WL.Ladylaw87 wrote:I called Admissions and they said the wait list was not tiered as it has been in past years. Mine said "we hope to get in touch with you sooner, but we promise to have an update by July 30." An update could say keep waiting

But all of this matters only if one is interested in traditional biglaw. If one isn't then ..... it's irrelevant.

Said an "update" by July 30th. Just concerned because I have seen in past threads that they pulled people off the WL as late as August.Ladylaw87 wrote:Did your letter say that they would let you know the decision by July 30th at the latest as well?w7ldcard wrote:Did they give any indication as to a timeline or how they are selecting off the WL.Ladylaw87 wrote:I called Admissions and they said the wait list was not tiered as it has been in past years. Honestly, I would rather get in late at this point. If we get off the waitlist after OCI at our current school (or our backup transfer school), no one can blame us for doing OCI and then trading up for name recognition, better future opportunities, T14 connections, etc.

Looks like we all got the same WL letter. I didn't even think of them saying, "keep waiting." Damn.transfermesoftly wrote:Mine said "we hope to get in touch with you sooner, but we promise to have an update by July 30." An update could say keep waiting

Re: GULC Waitlist Chances
I've seen that in past threads, too. It also looked as if people were getting the "are you still interested" email around mid-July if they ended up getting off the WL. Hopefully, we get one of those emails next week? Fingers crossed!w7ldcard wrote:Said an "update" by July 30th. Do we know if they have finished their initial review of applications? Also, how many people do you think are on the waitlist?

Anyone want to call admissions and ask this? Doubt they'd tell us, but you never know! They are super nice, at least!milliken834 wrote:Do we know if they have finished their initial review of applications? Also, how many people do you think are on the waitlist?

I called this morning and was told almost the same things as you were. I wanted to know if they received a document that I sent in. Hopefully someone else is willing to call and ask.Ladylaw87 wrote:Anyone want to call admissions and ask this? Doubt they'd tell us, but you never know! Yeah you could def do OCI at your old school then so that's not a bad option.transfermesoftly wrote:Honestly, I would rather get in late at this point. It's only irrelevant if you think it's easy to pay off sticker debt without biglaw.DukeofCambridge wrote:But all of this matters only if one is interested in traditional biglaw. If one isn't then ..... it's irrelevant.

Re: GULC Waitlist Chances
Could I do GW OCI with the intention of leaving if Gtown accepts me? I did not do 1L year at GW. Seems kind of screwed up that I can pay 1000 dollars for a deposit to GW, then do OCI, then leave for Gtown. Basically paying a grand for something worth way more. But what is one supposed to do in this situation? I can't do OCI at my former school because I am sure I am transferring.scottidsntknow wrote:Yeah you could def do OCI at your old school then so that's not a bad option.transfermesoftly wrote:Honestly, I would rather get in late at this point.
