GULC (sticker) --> NYU ???

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jul 18, 2014 12:22 pm

Top third at GULC, paying sticker. Just got accepted at NYU. I'm from NY and want to work in NY biglaw when I graduate. However, I already have a place in DC for the next year, have a good group of friends, etc. and feel that I'm already pretty competitive for NY BigLaw. I will try to negotiate with GULC for a scholarship with this acceptance.

If I can't wrangle any money out of GULC, would it make a signifcant enough difference at OCI to make transferring to NYU the right move?

If I can get money out of GULC, staying is the right move, correct?

If you can get a lot more money out of GULC, staying is the right move. Otherwise I would transfer.

2L at GULC. While I doubt that your OCI chances will improve significantly, if at all (since top 1/3 is basically locked for NY biglaw, all firms excepting WLRK are coming to GULC, and you'll be judged as a top third candidate from GULC at NYU's OCI), I would still transfer since you're not losing anything by doing so if GULC doesn't give you $$ (you're going from sticker T14 to sticker T6, which is a rational jump in my view). Your friends, I'm pretty certain, will remain your friends...plus, NYU's not THAT far away.

If you were getting $$ at Georgetown I would say stay since you have a great shot at OCI but since it's sticker -> sticker, might as well go. (Obviously assuming Georgetown doesn't offer you any $ to stay)

OP here - is there a thread on TLS or maybe data compiled elsewhere on how transfers perform at NYU's OCI? That's honestly my main concern/only reason I would want to transfer.

If I'm getting marginal-to-no boost at OCI from transferring, I don't really see the point. If I get biglaw from GULC and I get biglaw from NYU aren't my career prospects the same?

If more money at GULC, stay.
If not, NYU.

where do you want to spend the next two years presuming the same biglaw prosepcts?

There's no benefit to this transfer even with no money from NYU. Why turn your life upside down and throw away journal? You have access to all of the big NYC firms from your current school and you already have good grades. I challenge the people saying transfer to articulate a reason why other than "NYU = 6 and GULC = 14."

OP again. I just got a call from the FinAid Dean's office at GULC saying they had no money to give to upperclassmen. But then he asked me what number it would take to keep me here. I gave him one, only for him to respond by saying "Oh that's reasonable, I wish we had it to give to you."

If I could move all my law school friends and my girlfriend to NY, then it would be NY. I like NY as a city better, but I value the people I'm with right now.

I do have friends from home/college that all live in NYC, but those relationships will be there in 2 years.

This is my thought process right now. I can't seem to find a reason other than prestige and clerkship possibilities(?). The consensus seems to be that OCI will be almost the same, and I will be at a disadvantage for journal. Assuming I get an SA via OCI (which NYU does not increase my odds of getting), how does NYU help me any more than GULC going forward?

Also, NYU/NYC does cost more.
