You're obv going to get biglaw where you're at. I imagine you can get any firm in the top 5%. Doesn't seem like you're getting anything by transferring.

Are your parents poor?Anonymous User wrote:100k, prior to any bargaining.
Goals...biglaw in the immediate future to pay down debt/get the experience. Clerkships would be nice, though I know I might take hit if I left. In the future, who knows!

So another way to put this would be.Anonymous User wrote:100k, prior to any bargaining.

Is taking out another 60k+ of debt and losing (some) shot at clerkships thus requiring extra time spent in Biglaw worth the prestige of H?
personally doesn't sound like a good equation for me just bc of how much money you get currently and if you want big law only to pay down debt ... youll just have to spend more time in big law to pay sticker at H.
Unless you think youll get need-based aid at H?

It depends on your goals. If you want to clerk immediately after 3L, stay at DCNG (more likely you'll have established ties to profs next January). If you don't care about clerking (or are willing to clerk a year or two after graduation so that you have time to establish new prof ties for a later app cycle), then run the numbers on COA and just go with the cheaper one, because you'll get just about any firm you'd like either way.
I faced a similar choice 2 years ago. I was leaning towards Harvard until I realized their need based aid diminishes significantly for 3L after they account for SA money.
Edit for clarity: I turned down H's transfer offer to stay at my school. Very happy with my choice, because I ended up with a top boutique and a great COA clerkship.

is there a chance you could find out about LR sooner? If you're top 5% at some schools wouldn't you effectively grade-on?Anonymous User wrote:Also, this really would be a different calculus if we could find out LR earlier. Right now though, worried I might stay and not get in...in which case I'd be in an even worse position for clerkships

Do you and your parents combined make over $80k?Anonymous User wrote:Hey guys, thanks a lot so far. Re need based aid, I would likely qualify for some. (I suppose I should run numbers soon on how much of a difference it would be).
Not averse to clerking a year or two after biglaw either. (In a way, I think it could make me a better clerk; increase chances; good way to segue out if I don't like the career)

Re: In at H, ~5% at DCNG with $100k
You'll get a clerkship top 5% at these schools unless you are bad at creating an app package / interviewing. And even then, Harvard wouldn't save you. Either way, the monetary value of a clerkship isn't anywhere near 100k.
The increase in job prospects is at best marginal.
Transferring usually isn't even worth it at sticker. It's really not worth it when it costs 100k.

All factors taken into account isn't something that a poor says. I would know. I'm one.

If your parents are under 80k, there's a good chance you'll get significant aid, and if you max it out, your aid offer from H will be almost equivalent to your scholarship. If that's the case, I don't see the harm transferring.Anonymous User wrote:Don't want to get into specifics, but all factors taken into account the answer would be yesCounselorNebby wrote:Do you and your parents combined make over $80k?Anonymous User wrote:Hey guys, thanks a lot so far. Edit: I meant no. The calculation would put us under that.
