Revoking my fellowship!?
My school has a policy that says if you are transferring you must return your fellowship check. What kind of shit is this? I was awarded the fellowship in recognition of my accomplishments and it's being used to help me get to and from my summer internship as well as other living expenses. The fellowship is $1,500.
They have not flat out told me I need to return it yet (maybe because I haven't formally told them I'm not coming back), but if/when they do, I plan on fighting this policy as much as I can. It just seems wrong that they would ask back money that is given to help out a student trying to better his career. Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences on this?

Was the fellowship provided by the school?

It was a Dean's fellowship which I suppose was provided by the school.

Sounds like you'd have to return it.

It just seems wrong that they'd let a transfer keep it when alums of their school could also use fellowship money to better their career to do things like post grad fellowships

Re: Revoking my fellowship!?
What kind of fu**ed policy is that? If the goal of the fellowship to ease the burden on students interning away from home, and the purpose of transferring is to put myself in a better position in the future, what justifiable reason do they have to revoke it?
I'm going to tell them I'm spending the fellowship and have RELIED on the fellowship all summer and in the upcoming months. F*** them.

So tell your new school you need to take out $1500 more in COL loans to pay your old school back. It's not that hard to get.Anonymous User wrote:DELG wrote:It just seems wrong that they'd let a transfer keep it when alums of their school could also use fellowship money to better their career to do things like post grad fellowships

You could just not transfer.

Re: Revoking my fellowship!?
You came here asking a non-question, because you perfectly understood what their policy explicitly states. You're understandably upset. And I guess you needed a place to complain. They'll put a financial hold on your account and refuse to send official transcripts until it is repaid.

This is the only good solution, actually. You're not gonna go under, but you don't get to keep that money when you made the decision to transfer.DELG wrote:So tell your new school you need to take out $1500 more in COL loans to pay your old school back. Not sure why the majority of you would WANT to side with the school here. There is SOME issue of reliance here. Albeit, not justifiably because I was on notice of their policy.

I was simply curious if any of you fine gentlemen encountered a similar situation. Wouldn't you be ticked by this policy?

Yeah, it's a TTT policy. If you attend a TTT, you will run in to some of those. Congrats on getting out. Sorry you don't get to keep your free money.Anonymous User wrote:Not sure why the majority of you would WANT to side with the school here. There is SOME issue of reliance here. Re: Revoking my fellowship!?
Not really. The school wants to provide fellowship support to its own students. You've decided not to be a student at the school anymore. If the firm I summered at paid my bar expenses and then I decided to become a first-year associate at a different firm, I would expect the firm to ask me to pay back the expenses.Anonymous User wrote:I was simply curious if any of you fine gentlemen encountered a similar situation. Honestly, you sound entitled and a little crazy.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
