I don't want to insult them since I will be transferring to a better institution.

Ah, well I wouldn't transfer if I were at a T14. I guess it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. Just don't want them to think I'm leaving them for good etc.
And yes, contact them and tell them you're transfering.

I am interested in academia and would love to have the possibility to return as a professor to the school if I decide biglaw sucks.
I do understand that teaching is very hard to achieve from anything other than YHS.
