LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
Why even take the scholarship money in return for reduced chances of getting a good job? When you trade it back by transfering. Just LOL

first, who is doing this?
second, it kind of makes sense from a TTT/TTTT. when only a handful of firms even come to OCI, your options are pretty limited and it can be worth it for the larger pool.
also how do you feel about completing a transfer app to turn $$ -> $$$$

Sometimes people can transfer into better schools than they originally would have been able to get in to. Also, people could figure out more specifically where they want to practice or what they want to practice.

Re: LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
eh if you make an especially poor decision at the outset (despite the cash) it can be beneficial. Here's an anecdote for you: person took full ride at southern TTT despite being from the midwest and wanting to work there, finished top 5% after 1L, transferred to T20, secured six figure job in desired market at OCI. Ya he's looking at big debt, but he's also looking at a good job in his target market that would've been almost impossible from where he was.
That being said, the real lesson here is that if you don't get $$ from a school that gives you a good shot at what you want, retake and reapply or figure out something else to do with your life.

Re: LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
Went to lower ranked midwestern T1 that places ~3% in biglaw. Had substantial scholarship. Transferred to CLS, paid sticker, got big firm offer in NYC. Biglaw was almost certainly not going to happen from my old school. My grades weren't good enough and I had no connections. No way I could have been accepted at CLS as a 1L with my UGPA/LSAT. The only reason I got biglaw was because I transferred.
I'd definitely do it over again.

What makes you think this is the choice? I can't imagine there are may transfers who end up at a school they got into/could have gotten into the first time.Desert Fox wrote:Why even take the scholarship money in return for reduced chances of getting a good job? You're right. Your logic is clearly flawless. I stand corrected.

If you transfer to a school that can actually get you the job you want and your previous school wouldn't, I understand. But people leaving $$ at a T20/lower T14 to go to T6/HYS? Definite LOL.

Only disagreement is that it's not really a low-risk chance to see how you compete in law school; you might compete less well than you hope, in which case you probably still have your scholarship. The crucial point, though, is that by transferring you graduate with less debt than you would have had you attended at sticker for all three years, and you get a diploma from a better school. In most cases you do lose your shot at graduating with honors however.brazleton wrote:Wait, you save 1/3 of COA, get a low-risk chance to see how you compete on law school exams, and then get to do OCI at a superior school. As for the money, with the different loan repayment options available these days people don't necessarily need to be as constrained by loan totals as before.

Re: LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
Taking a scholly at low ranked school isn't low risk. You have like a 85% shot at getting stuck with a career in shitlaw.whelmer wrote:Yeah I fail to see how this is worth an LOL but taking sticker for all three years is not.brazleton wrote:Wait, you save 1/3 of COA, get a low-risk chance to see how you compete on law school exams, and then get to do OCI at a superior school. Plus, with the different loan repayment options available these days, people don't necessarily need to be as constrained by the loan issue as before.
Second, once you get good grades at a regional school, you already have the OCI connections you need. There are some situations where the local schools have no OCI, but that's pretty damn rare unless you were really retarded at took a scholly in some rando market you don't want to work at.
Transferring is a waste because you no longer need to the boost of the superior OCI. Taking the scholly is trading the higher risk for more money. But transfering is trading a bunch of money for marginally increased prospects. It's retarded.
Unfortunately, these posts are just as dumb as I expect from TLS on topic posters.

Re: LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
How can you say that low-ranked schools involve an 85% risk of getting a career in shitlaw, then say that transferring leads to only a marginal increase in career prospects? Do 3/4 of graduates of T14/T20 schools go into shitlaw? How worthwhile are those OCI connections from the regional school if they are in "shitlaw". Your points are all over the place. Are you of the opinion that someone who is accepted to a T14 with no scholarship and to a TT with scholarship should choose the TT? Why the animosity toward transfers? Even if these decisions should be made based solely on economic thinking, there are cases where transferring carries advantages.Desert Fox wrote:Taking a scholly at low ranked school isn't low risk. Re: LOL at people who take $$$ then transfer for sticker
it's cuz once you have the grades to transfer, you're no longer in the 85% of kids who will likely get shitlaw. At the non-T14's, most of the class have bad prospects and a small percentage at the top usually have great prospects, unless the school is so shitty that no one has good prospects or something.whelmer wrote: How can you say that low-ranked schools involve an 85% risk of getting a career in shitlaw, then say that transferring leads to only a marginal increase in career prospects?
Choosing lower school as an 0L isn't the same as choosing to remain at lower school post-1L when u've gotten good grades. Going to a lower school initially means you risk being in that 85%. But after you get good grades as a 1L, that risk disappears and now you're part of the small chunk of students who have decent opportunities at OCI.
So you're not comparing the prospects of average student at lower school to T14. You're comparing prospects of top student at lower school to T14, and that's the basis of his "only leads to marginal increase" argument.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
