Re: Binding Transfer Deposit?
Did you apply to Georgetown EA? If so, then go try and retrieve a password here: http://apps.law.georgetown.edu/admitted ... ssword.cfm
If it sends you an email with a temporary username/password, then that means you've been admitted. The temp username/password won't work, however. This just indicates that you're in their system as an "Admitted student."

I'm going guess either Minnesota or Emory, both in 20-25 and accepts with 1-semester grades.

Yes, you are correct.Jchance wrote:I'm going guess either Minnesota or Emory, both in 20-25 and accepts with 1-semester grades.
Does anyone have any insight into binding deposits for transfers? I cannot find anything on the forums.
This school is by no means my top choice, and I just don't think I can make a good decision re: whether or not to accept this binding deposit without hearing from any other schools.
Any insight/similar experiences is GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Re: Binding Transfer Deposit?
1. No, you are not wrong. It is straight up unfair, but what can you do about it? They want to lock a good candidate in before 2nd semester grades roll around, where you may or may not have more options.Anonymous User wrote: 1. I am wrong for thinking that this is a bit unfair?
2. Should I try to negotiate a later deposit date/the binding agreement?
3. If so, how should I go about doing this?
Pros of accepting now:
-not having to worry about second semester's grades. You can do writing competition for new school instead of your old one (most ppl do both when you only need to do one). I recall UMN has a super early deadline for writing competition, like May 11th.
-not having to go through the real transfer process, which can be a pain, and if you get in too late, u might miss OCI.
Cons: missing out on other schools.
2. You can try but I doubt they'll give it to you. See 1.
3. Email them or call them, not sure what else you want us to say.
P.S. At top 12%, if you think u can pull top 10%, i'll sit out and wait for the real transfer process. If you think you might do worst this semester and fall outside of top 15%, take their offer.

Re: Binding Transfer Deposit?
Yes, definitely unfair.
However, as the previous poster stated ... if you think you may do worse this semester, then definitely accept now. If I were in your position, I would assess the situation --> if you accepted now, you could possibly move at the beginning of summer and start a job and develop connections in the new location, you could familiarize yourself with the location for a while, all which would ease the "shock" of transferring into a new school without any connections.
On the other hand, you could kick ass this semester and would regret having chose a lower ranked school just so that you could ease by in your last semester at the current school. You would most likely always have this regret - but keep in mind, if you do worse this semester and lose out on the schools that have given you an offer now, and also the schools that "could" have given you an offer, then you will have intense regret as well.
Summary: If you feel confident about this semester, wait it out and hope for better schools to give you offers. I would contact whichever school has given you the offer now and ask for an extension. If they deny an extension, you should ask them if you would still be eligible if you maintain performance this semester. If they give you the cold shoulder, then thank them anyway and make your decision (whether to accept or to wait and hope).
Best of luck

OP. To reiterate my post, did you apply to Georgetown EA? If so, then access this site and enter the information it asks for. If it sends you an email, it means you were accepted. That could help you make up your mind at least in regard to ditching this binding deposit.

Re: Binding Transfer Deposit?
Surprise surprise, I had a $1000 nonrefundable deposit due days before I received my spring grades last year. That was on top of $600 I had to cough up in March. These schools know what they're doing. It's your choice to take the risk. If I went back in time, I'd probably have coughed up the dough again. "Drops in the bucket" seems to be the right way to look at it. But nonetheless, for me, $1600 was a HUGE drop - into an ENORMOUS bucket.
