Right outside the top 5 at W&L. What are my options?
Last semester:
Civ Pro: A-
Crim: A
Contracts: B+
Legal Writing: A
Torts: A
I'm #6 of 109 in the class, so right outside the top 5%.
W&L plummeted in the rankings, so I'm not exactly keen on staying here.
Where would I be able to transfer to? Would I be able to crack Columbia or UVA? How would my odds be different if I ended up in the top 5%?

Army is sending me. Cost is not an issue. Pretty much entirely personal preference.
Really just curious to see where I could go if I wanted to leave.

Congrats on your performance...impressive! There is no doubt you should transfer up from W&L but not simply because of the rankings.
Anyway, UVA is a given assuming the 5 ahead of you aren't applying there as well. The Dean of Admissions there has stated in the past that if in top 10% at W&L you are all set.
HOWEVER, I think most on TLS would agree that this move should be made based on the specific geographic market where you want to work and live. So definitely apply to a couple of T14 schools that are centrally located in urban markets (e.g. Northwestern, New York U, Georgetown) that appeal to you -- in addition to UVA.

Well, I'm working for the Army. So it doesn't really matter what region I go to. In fact, it doesn't even matter where I take the bar. I could take it in Montana.
Thanks to both of you for the advice!

Just about.patogordo wrote:you could get into basically any t14 school so i'd just apply to all the ones you like
But are you intending career Army? If so, go to Wisco and get waived into the Wisconsin bar without examination. As long as you're Army, you just have to be licensed anywhere, right?

Avoiding the bar exam is a stupid reason to go to a specific school.BVest wrote:Just about.patogordo wrote:you could get into basically any t14 school so i'd just apply to all the ones you like

OP, you should be able to get in at most of the T14, barring HYS. I'd throw an app at whatever school appeals to you.

UVA has taken multiple W&L transfers in past years.
The top few students have transferred up in any typical year so if "it's happening" you won't know until the admits start withdrawing.

For all those unfamiliar, Dean McShay is in charge of Admissions.
Spencer is a Civ Pro professor. Super brilliant. Bound to be a federal judge after he's done being a UVA professor.
McShay does a great job. I assume there's another W&L 1L or 2L in this thread. It's pretty obvious who I am.

And to answer your original question, I think you could crack Columbia and it's worth a shot applying to Yale or Stanford.

Much W&L love. This makes me not want to leave. And then I remember APLP exists.

The question shouldn't only be where can you get in, it should be where would it be worth it to transfer. What's your debt? If you are top ten people and don't transfer you will likely kill it at OCI.
