Current School Tanked in Rankings --> Xfer to GULC?
Hey all. I'm currently at a DC-area law school that totally tanked in the 2015 rankings. I have the grades to transfer to GULC but I need a little convincing that I should. I have a partial tuition scholarship so the financial hit would be pretty significant. I also genuinely like my professors and the school in general.
But, I'm troubled that because of the drop in rankings I'll be less desirable to employers even though my school seems to place fairly well in the area. Should I be worried? Is transferring a total no brainer if I have the grades?

Transferring to GULC might be a good choice for you, but the rankings of a magazine should have NOTHING to do with your decision. They're completely irrelevant to your employment prospects.threecharacters wrote:Hey all. I'm currently at a DC-area law school that totally tanked in the 2015 rankings. I'm thinking it's AU, not GMU. GMU slipped ~5 if I remember correctly, but AU slipped around 20 spots.hichvichwoh wrote:which school? If it's GMU then transfer the fuck outta there

Srsly guise. Now that GULC is back in the t13 where it rightfully belongs, employers are going to flock there in DROVES.muskies970 wrote:And if it's American SPRINT!

OP: current rank, scholarship %, and career goals, please.

OP here. School doesn't issue rank until after first full year. GPA is 3.741 (two courses are year-long, got A's on both midterms, assuming I can repeat that performance on the finals, my unofficial 1st semester GPA is a 4.045).patrickd139 wrote:Srsly guise. Scholarship is a little less than half tuition.
Career goals: Corporate transactional work or securities enforcement.

Is that a 4.3 scale?
Do you know what the curve is? Or what the historical median is?
Either way--It seems like you have a good shot at GULC. And it's prospects outweigh that half-tuition scholarship. Transfer. Also keep up your performance and apply to the other schools ranked 7 to 14.

It is a 4.33 scale since the school awards A+.CounselorNebby wrote:Is that a 4.3 scale?

Curve is between 3.0-3.33.
I really want to stay in the DC area as the access to substantive intern/externships during the school year is really unparalleled so I'm not sure I really want to apply to any other schools (and I hate moving).

Here's the thing though: GULC admits a lot of transfers. Based on anecdotal information, I've heard that transfers don't perform terribly well at GULC OCI. (And it's not like the non-transfers are knocking it out of the park either.) You might want to post in a GULC thread about what to expect as a transfer.threecharacters wrote:It is a 4.33 scale since the school awards A+.CounselorNebby wrote:Is that a 4.3 scale?

Externship opportunities are great and all, but they'll be cold comfort if you end up without a job in Corporate transactional work because you couldn't bother to move to NYC to attend NYU or CLS.

Do you really think I have a shot at NYU? I didn't mean to sound so inflexible, I just assumed Gtown was the most plausible/realistic option.rpupkin wrote:Here's the thing though: GULC admits a lot of transfers. I've checked the GULC threads and it seems like quite of few of the transfers did well in OCI. But, perhaps I've been reading selectively.
Honest question, what would you do?

You are reading selectively or people are posting selectively. One of the two.I've checked the GULC threads and it seems like quite of few of the transfers did well in OCI. But, perhaps I've been reading selectively.

I'm a little confused. What is your GPA for the fall semester? I don't understand this "unofficial" concept. If the grades are in, then it's official. To xfer to MVP or CCN you'll ideally like to be in the top 5% of your class.
In regard to OCIs, I only have anecdotal information obtained from students that transferred from my current law school to GULC. They did well. All got SAs. One is now at a V10 firm in NYC. Another at some firm in DC. However much weight anecdotal evidence carries, I would worry more about getting stellar grades and doing interview prep so you can knock those out of the park.

Re: Current School Tanked in Rankings --> Xfer to GULC?
Thanks for the feedback. I know the GPA is confusing. The issue is that a grade for the two year-long courses won't be awarded until completion of the final exam in May. So there is no grade for those two courses on my transcript (midterm grades are not reported). Assuming I can repeat the same performance on the final exam, I substituted my midterm grades for calculation of my GPA for the fall (which would be a 4.045). However, the GPA on my transcript is 3.741 (only three courses). Hope that helps clear it up a little.CounselorNebby wrote:I'm a little confused. What is your GPA for the fall semester? Just say 4.045. That grade is already there and will remain there even after you take the spring final (assuming you did the math right on how much weight to give the first-semester exams for those two courses).threecharacters wrote:Thanks for the feedback. As a side note, that seems like a crappy way to treat your 1Ls who you know will be applying for summer jobs as soon as fall grades come out. It would be just as easy to divide the classes into two one-semester courses (e.g. K I, K II) and provide a meaningful GPA on the fall transcript.

Anyway, OP. You should apply. Bottom line.

Do you go to Catholic?? I know Catholic does there grading along those lines. They also tanked from a t2 to t3.
