4.0+ at MVP; worth trying to transfer to HLS?
1) Are my chances solid enough that it's not a dumb move to approach professors for recs?
2) Also, for someone interested in private practice for the longterm, I understand that my job prospects won't change much for right after law school, but is the prestige boost ten years down the line worth it, or is LR or Latin Honors at MVP going to get me to the same place career-wise, assuming I stick it out in big law (or go to a boutique)? I'm interested in NY/CHI primarily and am afraid hotshot bankers want HYS on their lawyer's wall.
Excuse my ignorance if this is a completely self-defeating idea.

0L here, but I would think the answer to your question would depend on what your scholarship is like at Michigan currently.

I wanna hear more about what your secret is. You clearly figured out the law school exam thing pretty quick. I havent ever met anybody with those kinds of grades. Most people I know can only land an A once...maybe twice, and then like an A- and a b+ or something.

There is no upside to this transfer. What you give up in law review and connections at your current school isn't made up for by having Harvard on your diploma.

Depends upon your reasons for wanting to transfer. A Stanford, Yale and/or Harvard acceptance might lead to a better scholarship offer from your current law school; if the school's counteroffer to a H,Y, and/or S acceptance isn't enough, then ask for a position as a law prof. while completing your degree.

OP: Transfer to HLS. It's not really that difficult of a decision since you'd be an almost auto-admit.

Re: 4.0+ at MVP; worth trying to transfer to HLS?
Do you have a scholarship at MVP? Does your school offer scholarships to people that do very well ( or offer other incentives to them)? IF your goal is NY/ CHI, I would think that your grades will allow you to reach either destination, especially if you are at M.
I would ask the registrar if what the scholarship options are for students at the top of the class after 1L before going to get LORs. If they don't have any- then, I would strongly suggest talking to a professor about your goals and see what they say. If you don't have a substantial scholarship- then you have less to worry about, and can talk to professors that you already have a good rapport with.
But i would take some time and figure out your goals and your costs, and weigh what you give up to what you may obtain from transerring. Add the costs and see if it makes sense to you.
Note: if you have a large scholarship, then i would strongly advocate for you to stay

You're probably at least top 3% of your class, if not number one. With a 4.0 from MVP, you are pretty much guaranteed almost any firm you want. Secondly, if you keep it up, I think you could easily snag really nice clerkships (think Second, Ninth, and Seventh Circuits). Congratulations on doing so well in law school!

You must transfer. Consider this girl. Had she not transferred from Stanford to Yale she would be doing doc review today.

I agree that you should speak with admissions about scholarship first. If they shoot you down, just straight up tell your professors you need LORs for a transfer so that you can negotiate scholly. Make it clear to them that you have no intention of leaving. I'm sure they have had students in the past that have had to play this game too. They'll understand.

That girl transferred to join her fiance who was attending Yale. The strangest transfer would have to be this 3L here at HLS who transferred from Stanford to be... a few hours closer to her boyfriend in Europe?

Yeah as 7ED says, there actually seems to be an easy explanation for that one. Here's her then-fiancé, whom I think we can safely assume is somewhat bitter that he didn't get SCOTUS while his transferee fiancée did.
