Transfer: Tier 2, top 3% Forum

Hi everyone,

I'm currently at a school in the 60's in the top 3% (Legal writing was the only grade that pulled me down - Aced the exams)
I had a 169 LSAT coming in and a 3.4 UGGPA (huge upward trend).. I'm confident that I can pull my Law GPA a little more this semester (say top 1-2%) now that legal writing will be worth an irrelevant amount..
Two of my Professors love me and will be writing me targeted letters of Rec.

I'm interested in applying to UCLA, Georgetown, Berkeley, (reaches) Columbia, and Stanford..

What do you think my chances are at each school? Are there any other schools that I should be applying to? Warm weather would be preferred

Carreer goals are boutique IP/Corporate (mid or big law) into in-house counsel. Would love to start with a judicial clerkship and an eventual career in academia.

I don't really know why so many people with good grades come here asking for chances. Fact is that some schools just don't take very many transfers, but if you apply broadly, you up your chances incredibly. You probably have a chance at all the schools you mentioned albeit a small one at Stanford, but you gotta keep your grades up.

The only thing is.. I absolutely love UCLA.. is there any way they would offer money to a transfer? Otherwise, it wouldn't be worth the full sticker for me..

cavemen - I'm on a 25 k scholarship with a 50% stip - I am not making this up.. yes, people with 165's have double my money. Another reason i'm adamant about transferring - please don't call me an idiot - it's all i've heard for the last 6 months -_-

Unfortunately I'm not a STEM.. and regret it every second since I began college as a physics major (therefore, splitter status).

Business/Econ undergrad from a third tier state university -_-

People come here asking about chances because transferring is a black-box process and, at some schools, submitting applications results in some serious blowback. No point incurring the "wrath" if you've got no shot. OP has a shot, though, so (s)he should go for it.

Right. I'm not trying to come down on him or her for asking. I guess I'm just amazed at how many people ask about their specific chances.

But yea, OP, you are not an idiot. Apply to GULC EA. Think about Chicago ED. Keep your gtades up and Apply to entire t14. If you are worried about spending too much, don't apply to Cornell or HYS. (though if you kill it I would apply to hot S).

My UG college really killed me in law school (interviewed at UCLA.. and they were not impressed with that TTT) - do you know how I might mitigate this in transfer Apps?

And can I really do ED to Georgetown and still apply to others? I thought it was binding?

And I really love ULCA.. would it to be really stupid to attend UCLA over Berkeley at the same price?

In response to the above, Columbia is absolutely not a reach for you - they take a relatively large class and anecdotally I know they will take top 10% at a T25, so top 3% at a school in the 60s should be no problem. If you maintain your numbers, I think everything outside of HYS and Chicago is a lock, those are the only schools that to my understanding won't reach as far down school-wise.

If you can get in top 1%, I think all schools are within reach except Yale (and possibly Stanford) b/c of small transfer classes.

Oh and don't waste an app fee on Georgetown ED. Aim higher than that. You are unlikely to fall far given your performance and your LSAT.

GULC EA is not binding. Its a good option to hedge. $1000 deposit though.
