Transfer advice/chances (FINALLY)

Post by lasersgopewpew » Wed Jun 05, 2013 1:51 pm

Rankings finally released from my school today (but condolences to any who are still waiting, it's a cold bitch).

USNWR 25-30
Top 10%
3.74
ETA: will be invited to law review.
162 LSAT

My motivation for transferring is an improved shot at Biglaw. I have specific work I want to do, both as a firm lawyer and beyond, and Biglaw maximizes my chances of meeting those goals. However my current school is almost entirely regional, and Biglaw in my market is very, very limited to a small handful of firms, none of which are V30 or higher. I'd also like to considerably improve my chances to go to the west coast.

Anywhere I transfer will come with greatly increased COA funded entirely by loans, even if my modest scholarship doesn't renew, which is likely considering where I finished this year. That said, had I been accepted at any of the schools where I was originally waitlisted, I'd be paying sticker, anyway, with hopes of a scholarship IF I got into the first decile after 1L.

I have very positive LORs from my writing prof and another prof that I took two classes with this year. I have some nice softs, though nothing earth shattering, but enough to show that I didn't just camp out in the library for 8 months.

Right now I'm thinking of applying to CCNPB. Curious your thoughts/advice on my situation, and what you think my chances are at this list of schools. Thanks in advance, I appreciate everyone's helpful feedback.

I think you're probably under 50% at CCN and over 50% at P and B.

However, I think law review at a top 30 is better than transferring.

Not necessarily when your biglaw+clerkship is 8.5%. By posting the numerical ranking you might as well say you are at ASU, if that is true I would consider transferring. Also considering their rankings jump recently, I would also base your chances more on the strong regional schools than just arbitrarily saying top 30. Considering that, I would take a look at a kid from CU last year who was top 8% and got into Northwestern, Michigan and Columbia so I would say your chances are decent at one of the T-14.

You'll probably get into 1-2 of those schools. Which ones is hard to know. I'll predict Mich and Penn. Let me know if I'm right.

Also, why not throw in an app at Michigan?

I didn't list Michigan :P

I hadn't really thought of it, to be honest - wasn't sure it's worth it. Also have limited resources for applying. Do you think Michigan gets enough West Coast love and is it enough of a jump?
