T20->T18 for 40k more debt
Im not in yet. Just got grades and am thinking of applying.
100k to 140k debt. The T18 is in my #1 prefered market.
GW/UMN/WUSTL -> Vandy/UT/USC
Good move or bad?

dude, the transfer thread is quiet. relax. and no, the move is likely dumb unless maybe MAYBE its to the region you wish to reside in and have ties.Anonymous User wrote:Bump to top of active topics.

You have $100k in debt at your current school, but would have $140k in debt at your new school? (Did I read that correctly?)Anonymous User wrote:It isstillwater wrote: the move is likely dumb unless maybe MAYBE its to the region you wish to reside in and have ties.
If so, and if T18 is in your target market, then it might make sense. What kind of options in your home market do you have for 1L summer at your current school? What's your class rank? (Can be approximate. No need to out yourself.)

Yes, you read that correctly. 140k total if i transfer, 100k total if I stay. that includes UG debt.patrickd139 wrote:You have $100k in debt at your current school, but would have $140k in debt at your new school? I am somewhere in the 2nd quartile. My job prospects are not looking good. I realize my shot at getting in as a transfer are not good, but I think I can write a compelling PS & why X, and can get good LORs from law profs. Plus strong ties.
Maybe I should just target the T18 market with my T20 degree instead?

Re: T20->T18 for 40k more debt
You should absolutely do this. You're not taking on too much more debt, so I think that's a wash. Being in the top half is going to make it difficult to stand out at your other school's OCI though. Plus, you're going to be answering the "why transfer?" question a shitton.Anonymous User wrote:Yes, you read that correctly. 140k total if i transfer, 100k total if I stay. that includes UG debt.patrickd139 wrote:You have $100k in debt at your current school, but would have $140k in debt at your new school? Have you factored in the cost of living increase or decrease in your projected increase in costs?

Yeah, the COL difference is calculated in.patrickd139 wrote:You should absolutely do this. You're not taking on too much more debt, so I think that's a wash. Im working under the assumption I will not get anything through OCI at either school.
As far as not transfering and targeting my prefered market, Im worried my degree from GW/UMN/WUSTL wont be appriciated as decent, and that I would have been better off at UC-D/H/I or SMU/UH.

SMU and UH are not T18 schools.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah, the COL difference is calculated in.patrickd139 wrote:You should absolutely do this. I mean that i would have even been better off picking a local tier one instead of my current school when choosing a LS as a 0L

I should have made a poll.
Is it worth 40k for me, someone with 100k debt, to transfer to to USC/UT/Vandy located in the market I want to pracitce? Im at WUSTL/UMN/GW.

If you're gunning for UT, you likely won't have that option. Other than that, I say try and transfer. If nothing else, you MIGHT be able to squeeze a few dollars out of your current school.Anonymous User wrote:I should have made a poll.
