Top 1%... how to get free ride from school but NOT transfer

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 22, 2013 11:29 pm

Hey guys,

Is there any way to bargain for $$$ from my school but NOT go through the process of transferring? I love my school and want to stay, but I really don't want to pay next year...

If so, around what month would I start trying to do this?

After you get your Spring grades is probably the earliest. But seriously, if you really want money, apply to GULC EA and use that as leverage. Going through the process sucks, but it will probably be hard to get money unless you pretend you're going to bounce.

Has your school given money in the past? Some schools do and some won't. Mine didn't even attempt to stop me but my friend, and along with everyone who had transfer acceptances at his place, got full-ride offers.

Make sure you apply for all of the regular scholarships you can apply for in the spring. Otherwise, you'll just have to apply to other law schools during the summer like you are going to transfer. Get some acceptances. Tell your Dean that you have some acceptances that you are tempted to take, but that you really want to stay at your current school if it makes financial sense. Set up a meeting to talk about it. Be professional.

Know that some schools give out aid to potential transfers and some do not. It's very possible that they will give you little/nothing unfortunately and there may not be anything you can do about it. The meeting may be a negotiation or it may just be a statement.

Good luck.

I basically did the above, but my school could only offer me $5k. There wasn't any room for negotiation unfortunately.

Obviously, transfers are out of the US News game.

The only incentive they would have to offer you money is to keep you from moving and keep paying. Free ride is out, though in theory they would be a better position if they gave you a 90% discount if that is what it took to keep you. In the end, you just have to try.

This isn't true. The top of the class get the transfer offers and those are the most likely to get good jobs/pump employment stats. It's good to keep them. My friend's school had 15 students transfer and every single one of them got a full ride offer. Though it's very school specific.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the responses. I believe that my school does give out $$$ to prevent people from transferring. What I'm really uncertain about is 1) When do begin the process of negotiation: do I wait until Spring grades come out, or start earlier? Spring grades won't be out until I'm guessing earliest mid-late June, so that might be a problem, and 2) Do I actually have to go ahead and apply to schools to transfer, or do you think I can just tell them that I'm strongly considering transferring (and then not have to go through the headache of LOR/Personal Statements)?

Usually you actually have to have an acceptance in hand.

Thanks everyone! I like the idea of applying to Georgetown for Early Action, but if accepted, do you know when I would need to make a final decision by?
