Transfer from Detroit Mercy to Loyola Chicago Forum

I finished in the top 12% at UDM, on Moot Court and Law Review, made great friends, however, I was just accepted into Loyola Chicago. I was just wondering what people think... is it worth it to transfer? I love Detroit, but obviously Chicago is a better city, especially for practicing law.

I should also mention I have a 55% scholarship at UDM while I would be paying full price at Loyola. Any thoughts would be helpful.

I would say transfer bro to a better schol with better connects and better job prospects.....but debt is always something to consider. Best of luck either way bro

Loyola's a nice school but job prospects are dismal. Chicago has a ton of schools and a good portion of the BigLaw jobs are taken by Chicago/Northwestern people. At least in Detroit you'll have less competition.

For what its worth, I had a friend in the exact same position two years ago, same two schools. He transferred. Says he would do it again if faced with the same decision.

I think he HAS to get out of Detroit Mercy. But I don't think that Loyola will be the greatest place. I mean, it IS better than Detroit Mercy, though.

It depends what you're looking for. BigLaw is out of the question, though Loyola people do pick up gov't/small/mid size jobs. But it's really tough to get those and the Chicago market is not in great shape economically. Also, you have the competition from Kent/DePaul/Marshall/Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois, etc.

What are your career goals? Do you have ties to the Chicago area? Have you negotiated more scholarship money from Detroit Mercy? What are your realistic job prospects out of Detroit Mercy?

You need to also consider cost of living because it will cost you a penny or two more to live in Chicago. In addition to what patrickd139, what is your financial situation like? If you come from wealth and can afford the uptick in price then it is a different story. Your ROI on both options is relatively low but I would minimize debt and graduate from the TTTT before going to a TT as expensive as Loyola in a city as expensive as Chicago.

If you're from Michigan my strong advice to you would be to minimize debt and stay in Michigan. I would go to UDM and tell them you're considering transferring and see if there's any more money there for you.

Realistically, if you're on top of things, you've already mass-mailed Michigan firms. It's too late to mass mail Illinois firms and you can't count on OCI at Loyola. Between the late date and the money, I think you should stay. My advice would be different if we were talking about a better school, but realistically? The difference between Loyola and UDM doesn't justify the added expense at this late date IMO.
