Duke Transfer Apps 2012

Post by InnocuousDiatribe » Fri Jun 29, 2012 5:52 pm

Anyone else applying?

Also, if you're applying, did you get asked to do a phone/in-person interview by Duke?

I applied. Haven't heard anything about an interview though. But I am also still waiting on my official class rank to be issued so my app is not complete

Can anyone share their number ranges?

Also, I check transfer statistics at Duke Law via the LSAC site. Apparently, Duke Law had 5 students transfer in and 8 students transfer out.

Does anyone know Duke Law's philosophy on accepting transfers? Only 5 students is considerably low. But, I guess it is based off seat availability which vary each transfer cycle.

T2 (50s), Ranked 7 / ~250. They're supposed to have a small transfer class (as usual). I'm thinking 15 or fewer.

Just got an interview request. Already in at Northwestern, though, and I think I would prefer NU. Hmmmm.

Ditto on the interview requests - what were your stats?

in all seriousness, Id take NU over Duke, unless you want to work in Duke's region. (which I do)

edit: Im T2 top 10%

Does anyone know the class rank and school tier that would make Duke nod "yes" or at least interested? Transfer applications are pretty expensive. Just want to know what other think being that historically Duke take a small number of transfers each year. Thanks!

I cannot answer that question with any specificity. I know that top 10% is generally the line of competitiveness.

To be honest, with a small transfer class like Duke, if you hadnt gotten them all your supplemental materials yet, I would not apply now. (im broke too). because it might take 2 weeks to go complete and by then they woudl probably have their class and wait list. But that is just my opinion. I might be wrong.

Did my interview a couple days ago. Got a good vibe.

Question for you NU folks, why would you take NU over Duke? Is it simply regional considerations?

I'm not sure if this is kosher, but what kind of interview questions did you get? And feel free to not answer since I know this is a competition and what not. Or just PM me. :)

My stats are T40, top 8%.

Per NU vs. Duke, I am leaning towards NU because they seem to do a little better in biglaw placement. And I don't have much of an interest in the southern region. And I've heard hit or miss things about NC (whereas most people seem to enjoy Chicago).

I should probably put some thought into it, though.

In general, I agree that NU has more broader appeal. On the flip side, DUKE has amazing pull in a narrow area, and then above average pull elsewhere. (anecdotal evidence from big law people). Duke's small size is a double edge sword. They look out for eachother and the network is useful im told, but they are not everywhere. For me, I want to work in their area, so Duke would be a great choice.

NU is an awesome big law % placing school. I dont know much about their distribution. for whatever its worth, I think there are more NU people in NYC than Duke.

edit: I dont think youd be mad at either place though. cant really go wrong, you are just choosing between different levels of "right"

All quiet on this front. From the interview, I got the impression they were gearing up to make some decisions soon, but I haven't heard anything. I have a unsubstantiated hunch we'll hear something this week though.

Still no news here.

Had my interview a few days ago and I was told that they are only taking 5-7 transfers this year. I was also told decisions would be coming out very soon (end of week at the latest).

Makes sense. Class of 2013 was over-enrolled big time. With the 5-7 transfers, our class would be about 225-230. Best of luck to everyone!

Duke claims to focus on transfer applicants' reasons for "Why Duke Law". If not evident from one's transfer application but the other factors are strong, a request for an interview may be made. This would be another opportunity to focus on "Why Duke Law".

P.S. Guess which law school edits the Alaska Law Review.
