Is GULC worth the transfer?
Current School: #51
Rank: Top 3%
In at GULC. Waiting on CCN & H.
Goal: Biglaw in NYC/DC/FL.
Financial Situation: Will graduate current school with plenty in the bank. If I transfer, debt would be less than 50k, probably around 25k. Would rather make more $$$ than buy a house. The wife is paying living expenses.
I would prefer CCN or H (clearly), but is GULC worth it???

You'll likely get into somewhere higher.
But even if you didnt, you should be able to land something good in your current OCI. Do you not like the region your current school is in? Can it not get you one of the markets you seek?

Thought I'd jump in here if ari doesn't mind, since this question has been running through my mind.arigoldwannabe wrote:Current School: #51

Ya im hoping for Columbia or NYU.aca0260 wrote:You'll likely get into somewhere higher.

My current OCI blows. I think 2% got firms of 501+ attorneys last year. The school is in my home market and i would be fine staying. However, my wife and I would like to experience a new place. I figure its much easier to lateral from NY/DC to my home market than the other way around.
So, back to the original question, is GULC worth it? Is interviewing at median (or whatever transfers are considered) at GULC a huge gamble when my debt will be ~25k?

25k debt at a t14?..............
That is not a gamble. You should go if your current OCI cannot place you where you want to be with your numbers

Georgetown should yield more options than FSU.

If you're at a FL school you gotta realize that "big" firms in FL, and I mean market players, aren't 500+ and some of them aren't even NLJ250. Think Trenam, Hill Ward, Bush Ross, LDDKR, Gunster, Bilzin, etc. Those aren't small fish and are up there with the big dogs.arigoldwannabe wrote: My current OCI blows. Agreed, but firms like Bilzin dont interview here. Gunster does, but they interview at half the t-14 and take the floridians that went there. (GreyRobinson is similar).rad lulz wrote:If you're at a FL school you gotta realize that "big" firms in FL, and I mean market players, aren't 500+ and some of them aren't even NLJ250. Yeah the FL firms do like people from T14/Vandy/Emory who want to come back.arigoldwannabe wrote:Agreed, but firms like Bilzin dont interview here. I would too. Even a great firm like Stearns Weaver that was started by FSU grad (Stearns) is filled with T-10.rad lulz wrote:Yeah the FL firms do like people from T14/Vandy/Emory who want to come back.arigoldwannabe wrote:Agreed, but firms like Bilzin dont interview here. We would be very happy with NYC and realize that would be the most probable location post-grad. We are all about exploring new places and an adventure. lol. I will bid the "elite" florida firms that dont interview at my school.Jessuf wrote:Ari - do you want to return to FL? Or are you and your wife ok with NYC?

I am in a similar situation, with lower stats T2 5-6%, my school places around the same, and I am thinking it is not worth the extra price, giving up a scholly and LR. Waiting on CNPM. If they accepted you so fast with an early deadline, you will get better schools.

Re: Is GULC worth the transfer?
Thanks for that list. I would DEFINITELY not be making the move to get a SA position in FL. I think that would be stupid. However, I would use some bids on them.Jessuf wrote:Not very many FL offices to bid on at GULC's OCI. Do you have access to that? There's Akerman Senterfitt, Baker Hostetler, Boies, Foley & Lardner, Gunster, Hogan Lovells, Holland & Knight, Hunton & Williams, K&L Gates, McDermott, Morgan Lewis, Squire Sanders, Weil, and White & Case. However, a lot of those offices will have tiny (1-2) SA classes. Make sure you get on the mass mailing.arigoldwannabe wrote:We would be very happy with NYC and realize that would be the most probable location post-grad.
