Hey guys, I have been admitted. If anyone already accepted (or someone soon to be, once that happens...) is interested in rooming up, there is a really nice place called Domus that I am interested in living. 2-Bedroom rent is ~$2700 (1300/1400 per person). Msg me if interested.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Now I am wishing I played up my Philly-area upbringing more... I did mention it but maybe I should have used some street slang or attached a picture of Pat's.

I was accepted on Tuesday and just told the professor I'm working for over the summer. I can't tell this story without giving myself away, so I'll just do it. My 1L school is William & Mary, and I want biglaw in NYC. My professor's exact words were: "Congratulations on Penn. I do not know if it will help your career."

Recap of stats: #13/219, #1 in moot court tournament, LR. WM ranked 35 (was 27, we dropped). Zero interest in working in VA, and 6 hours between me and SO is really sucky.

Is my professor blinded by loyalty to WM? Or is he being practical and thus probably correct? If I can probably still get biglaw from WM with current stats, I'm thinking the personal factors still make Penn worth it.

I have absolutely zero connection to Philly, but my personal statement was the fresh prince theme song.

I'm not sure i'm experienced enough to give advice, but if i was in your position, i would go to penn with no hesitation. (even without personal reasons)

Forestgirl - I have noticed that law school professors do start to get a kind of anecdotal attachment to their own schools. They know lots of students who have been successful from their classes, but they of course don't know how students at other schools are doing. One of my professors (whom I respect greatly) told me that my class rank meant I could get a 5th Circuit clerkship or a job at Fullbright Jaworski. This is not impossible, but the statistics show that kind of job is considerably more likely somewhere other than my school.

Biglaw in NYC (or maybe Philly). I went to WM thinking I wanted nonprofit, but I did some soul-searching and realized I sort of like feeding myself and living in a decent apartment.

Thanks Miles and Lyon-- agreed.

random, but i think you would actually have a lot of amazing opp at your current school Miles. being #1 at a school in the 50s is a big achievement.

Well, considering W&M LST figures show ~6 percent in biglaw, and you're at top 5.9 percent, I don't know how it wouldn't massively increase your odds of getting biglaw. Your rank is more than high enough to get through just about any firm's GPA cutoff, but the problem is that W&M's OCI is a joke, and you'll be competing for very few spots. Throw in the personal factors and this one is a no-brainer.

Your professor sounds exactly like the Deans at my current school. I'm pretty sure you will have a much better chance at biglaw if you transfer. You'll get more interviews at OCI at Penn than you probably would at WM and employers will see your grades from WM anyway. And even if you strike out, you'll be in a better position to find something 2L/3L coming from Penn than you would be at WM.

Or at least that is how I justify transferring.
