Any opinion on my chances at T10 schools?
Hey guys,
For anyone that transferred from a similar position than me, what do you think my chances are at T10/T14 and how did your cycle go? I'm at Miami and I got a 3.888 this semester and an award for the highest score in contracts. Unfortunately, I won't have a class rank until summer, but according to the past couple years I'm in the top 1-2%. I want to work in Miami and I'm on scholarship, so I have those dilemmas as well; however, I want BigLaw. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Should definitely have a shot at CCN, I think. If you can manage to be #1 in your class, or stay in that 1%, none of them aren't worth applying to, I'd say. My guess is you'd be a lock at some T14s and probably some T10s. Blanket 'em.

Thanks for the advice. Did you transfer? If so, from what range did you transfer and what were your 1L stats? How did your cycle go?

Not the previous poster, obviously, but I transferred from a similarly ranked school with a likely similar class standing as you to a T10 school (and got into 2 T10 schools). Better question is if you want to work in Miami what you will get out of the transfer other than prestige, and if it's just prestige, whether it is worth the financial and other costs.canesfan1986 wrote:Thanks for the advice. I just really want BigLaw, and I guess what I'm trying to figure out is whether I'll have a better shot at it from a T14 as opposed to Miami. Then, there's a part of me that says, if this doesn't work out for me from Miami, do I really want to be wondering what if? I guess that weighs on me too.

I'm a 1L, so don't know from first-hand experience, but I pretty much am regurgitating advice from this thread. I mean, I think it's pretty much in Arrow's post, sort of estimates about where you need to be to transfer from a TT to X in the T14, and I think top 1 or 2% from anywhere in the 2nd tier has a very good shot at T10 and a good shot at T6.

If you want biglaw in general, your chances would probably slightly improve as a result of a T10 transfer, although I imagine they'd be pretty good already at top 1-2%. However your chances at Miami biglaw might actually decrease. This happened to a classmate of mine who transferred from a TT to an elite national school. Biglaw firms in the region of the TT wanted nothing to do with this person. You might run into the same. Firms will rightly wonder why you would transfer away from Miami if you want to work in Miami.canesfan1986 wrote:I just really want BigLaw, and I guess what I'm trying to figure out is whether I'll have a better shot at it from a T14 as opposed to Miami. However, if this is talking about me, it's not entirely accurate. I only got 1 CB in the TT's primary market, but I did get CB's with almost every top firm in my home market (which is the same as the TT's secondary market). So if you're actually FROM Miami, you may be okay in terms of going back there.
If you want BigLaw in NYC or Chicago or somewhere that's not Miami, then considering transferring to a T10 or T6 (which you have a good shot at based on your first semester GPA).

Yes, I was referring to you. However, I was also thinking of someone else with a similar experience when I wrote it. Now that you mention it, you are entirely correct. Hope I didn't mischaracterize your experience too much. I do think one of the problems is that in a market like Miami where the firms have small summer classes, they are not all going to travel all the way to schools like Penn, Michigan and Boalt, so whereas OP can probably get a screener with every firm in Miami from UM, he or she will have to hustle some of them on his/her own from some T10s.keg411 wrote:+1quiver wrote:Completely agree with this.Wholigan wrote:If you want biglaw in general, your chances would probably slightly improve as a result of a T10 transfer, although I imagine they'd be pretty good already at top 1-2%. No big, I'm sure I'm not the only one with that experience .Wholigan wrote:Yes, I was referring to you. However, I was also thinking of someone else with a similar experience when I wrote it. But I agree with you. Transferring from Miami to a T10 with the intention of working in Miami after graduation could be really stressful in terms of travel, and there probably won't be any Miami firms at OCI, so you'd basically have to pick another big market anyway and try to sell that market on why you want to be there as well.

I hear you guys. One of my profs from last semester who went to U Chi. was telling me that HYS was easier to get into as a transfer student. I hope that's the case, but I'm not counting on it. Think top 1% is enough to get one of HYS? You can burst my bubble if you want lol I'm going to send the apps out anyway.

It's probably not totally out of the question, but HYS is pretty hard from T2's, even for people in the top 1%. It's probably worth apply to H, though (and maybe S if you have S ties). I think you're more likely to get CLS/NYU and probably will get Michigan/Penn.canesfan1986 wrote:I hear you guys. Yeah I agree with this. I honestly think Chicago is easier to get into than YHS. They take about the same class size as YS (maybe a little bigger) and although H takes about double what Chicago does, YHS is the top tier; meaning more T20 people applying to YHS when it wouldn't be worth it for them to transfer to CCN. Regardless, if you're top 1% I say give it a shot. I had almost no shot at H but I still regret not applying.keg411 wrote:It's probably not totally out of the question, but HYS is pretty hard from T2's, even for people in the top 1%. Re: Any opinion on my chances at T10 schools?
Hey, just saw this thread. Not sure whether you got all the answers you were looking for, but I transferred from Miami this past year, so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring if you had any questions. I also transferred here with someone else from UM who has a SA working at a V10 satellite in Miami. So it's certainly not impossible for you to get a BigLaw job in Miami after transferring AWAY from Miami.
Just based on last year's rankings and how we were able to transfer, if you keep your GPA where it's at, you should have a very good shot at much of the bottom half of the T10, say, NMPB. I would put V in there except last year they took like 10 transfers and they love Virginians, so that wasn't much of a help.
ETA: I'm crossing my fingers you had Wild Bill Widen for Ks.

Haha I hadn't heard about Wild Bill Wyden. I had a visiting professor for Ks. It looks like I missed something special lol
Well, since you came from Miami, do you mind PM'ing or posting where you ranked and how you did on your cycle? You'd give me the best idea of what to expect.
Thanks.
