Stay or Go?

Post by gags12 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 10:52 pm

I'm ranked in the top 5 (or top 2%) of my T20 school. I haven't heard from everywhere that I applied, but I'm trying to gauge what I should do in anticipation of having to make a quick decision. I'm in the midwest and looking to work in DC and trying to make sure I end up making the choice that will open the most doors in the world of big law and possibly federal clerkships.

why didn't you apply to Yale. It is closer geographically to DC than Harvard. So it probably places better.

Top 2% at GW should have you set for D.C.

Can they increase your scholarship?

I assume D.C. as you said top 20, and going to UT/VANDY/USC/WUSTL for DC would have been hella dumb.

He's at WUSTL, U Chi or NU.

There is no question UC is a Top 20 school. And NU is usually considered so also.

but then he would have said top 14 or top 5.

i know the rankings lol, but people always play up their school so when they say t-17 you know it's vanderbilt, not t-14 or ucla.

Best for BigLaw: Harvard, Columbia (but all those schools place well)
Best for Clerks: UVA and Harvard (but again all do decent here)

Look into transfer opportunities to get on law review. All these schools are great and would fit your goals, but the one thing that would most help with your goals is getting on law review at your new school.

For clarification:

- I'm at Wash U and on LR
- Tuition costs are not really a factor

Why I didn't apply to Yale and why I went to Wash U when I wanted to work in DC are not really important anymore. I was just trying to get a feeling from strictly a job perspective which schools made sense to transfer to and in what circumstances I'd be better off staying put.

Thank you for the responses
