Another what to do...

Post by ms2010 » Mon Jul 11, 2011 6:45 pm

Top 5% at a school in the 50s. Law Review. Moot Court. I want to practice in NY and really don't like my current school. Pay 10,000 a year.

I got into GW today and need to deposit by Thursday to participate in their OCI. I have apps in at a bunch of other schools and am waiting to hear. Thoughts? Is GW not worth it at all to make the move?

Dont transfer. With those stats you'll get in elsewhere and gw is not worth giving up that rank and lr

You think so? I'm waiting on Fordham, NYU, Columbia, GTown, and Penn... and getting nervous!

Not at Cardozo, but would stay there if I was!

Do not go to GW. You'll probably get into a better school, and even if you don't, GW as a transfer will not do all that well in NYC employment.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking along the same lines. Only transfer if it accomplishes your goals and this does not seem to do that.

I think you'll hear from Penn and GTown by thursday. Besides, do they require you to withdraw other applications? If not, can you just eat the deposit if you get in somewhere else later? I'm sure NY firms don't come to WCL, but if you are top 5% and mass-mail every firm in NYC approx. yesterday, your chances are probably almost as good as they'd be as a GW transfer. Just my opinion.

Yeah, while I am not at WCL, I did start doing the mass-mail thing. I think I agree with all of you. This was too easy of a decision.

Perhaps if I get rejected from the rest of my life before Thursday, my opinion will change...

Unless you applied late/ your app sucks, you'll get one of those other schools.

I think you'll get one. Don't choose Fordham either. You have t14 transfer numbers. No compromising!

Update here... gotten rejected from Fordham and waitlisted at GTown.

I'm really unhappy at my school, but I feel like it would be a terrible financial/career move to go to GW. I only pay 10K a year at my current school and would pay full price at GW. Does anyone think that GW really could vastly improve my career outlook?

Ms, I agree with everything that has been said.

Unless I am admitted to Yale, I will enroll from Penn State (#60) to Virginia in the fall.

For me, the costs are the same (though PSU did add a $20k schollie when I finished first at the end of the year). But I will save a little on cost of living. Loan difference will be about $40k.

The number of firms interviewing at OCI at UVA is 10 times that at Penn State, and that is just for the early August session.

So for me, it was well worth giving up LR and a half schollie.

For you, GW is much higher priced isnt it? And I dont think you are going to give yourself any strategic advantages by moving.

Yes - it is a lot more. I also have moot court, mock trial, and law review at my current school. Plus, I am #7 in the class... I guess I'm staying put unless a miracle happens and I hear from one of these schools I'm still waiting on!

how do you have no decisions?

are you contacting these schools to see what is going on? I can't believe you still have so many loose ends...

Just wondering generally, but why are you so unhappy at a school you're doing so well at?

I am going to go against the grain of advice on TLS because my advice would probably be to transfer to GW since you said that you don't like your current school. GW is a top-notch school IMHO, everyone seems really nice who works there, and let's face it, DC is just a cool city.

But today I think is the last day to do OCI at GW, so if you can't do that, then you lose a lot of the value of transferring.

So, I will be hoping and praying that you get into one of those other schools that you applied to. With your numbers, you should get into one of those other schools.
