$250 for letter of good academic standing?
Is this legit? I mean, can they do this legally or is this basically blackmailing?
Anyone having similar experiences with their schools? I am trying to see if this is a common phenomenon and whether I should fight it rather than swallow the cost

They should be only be charging for the administrative costs associated with processing the letter, rather than using it as a profit generating mechanism.

i am genuinely sorry you go to such a shitty school, and glad that you are getting out. i think the best thing to do here is just suck it up and pay, though. and out the school.

Try to explain the situation to the adcoms. Ask if you can provide the letter of good standing after admittance in the event you're admitted. At the same time, stress your interest in the school.
Mine were free (didn't even pay for postage) fwiw.
ETA: iirc, someone said that UIUC is the school that does this in another thread (but I might be wrong).

$250 each? That's absurd. I feel bad about bitching over my $40 per letter + transcript.

That's insane. Both our letters of good standing and transcripts are free (although apparently the latter is thanks to the main campus undergrad students).

Not sure if OP goes to Illinois, but they do have this shitty policy. $250 for the first two and $50 for each school after that. It's basically extortion but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to keep people in the middle of a cornfield.

That's extortion. Sorry to hear that.
Here, transcripts are $5 each, and letters of good standing are free.

Offer to furnish the pen, paper & postage and see if they'll do it for a more reasonable fee.

I don't think there's anything else that Illinois does that is similarly shady. Unless you're talking about the admissions scandal from a couple years ago under the former dean. That was shady but not in a screwing-your-students kind of way.
I like pretty much everything else about Illinois besides this though.

Do you have to send this to every school you apply to? Or only the one you attend, or to LSAC?
1 time fucking you over for 250 sucks, fucking you for 250 each time is unacceptable.

You need one for every school. It's $250 for the first two, $50 for each school after that.Desert Fox wrote:Do you have to send this to every school you apply to? Or only the one you attend, or to LSAC?
