t4 top 7 percent chances
Hello all i am currently attending a t4 school in socal. I am in the top 7 percent of my class. CALI awards for crim law, torts 1, contracts 2, civ pro 2. Legal writing did me in or I am sure I would have easily been top 1-3 percent. How do other schools look upon such a disparity between the grades in your substantive courses and legal writing. I know some have said they weigh legal writing heavily. Here are the schools that i have applied to but some of these are long shots fosure. I also have compelling reasons to apply to schools in the bay area. How does for example being afghan help me or hurt me or does it do anything at all for me.
thanks
thanks

Hi,
From what people are saying around here you need to be "Top 5" (not top 5%) to get into Berk, UCLA, USC etc. However, I would imagine you would have a great chance to get into USF and Loyola.
Best of Luck!

Re: t4 top 7 percent chances
The consensus seems to be that they just look at overall GPA, and no class gets weighed more heavily than another. No way to verify if this is true or not.
"Good reason" can make a difference, if it is actually a good reason. Being an Afghan I don't think will help in itself, but if it ties into your "good reason" for wanting to transfer, then it could help.
You should provide an explanation, i think, for why you did so poorly in LRW.. the fact that you did so badly in it by comparison will stand out.
Oh, and +1 on what maf says about your chances at the various schools.

While your overall GPA will get you noticed by the admissions teams at the school noted above, beyond that the admission acceptance process is holistic. Legal writing is a very important class. If it was a fluke or you have any other outstanding writing experiences I might write an addendum. Also, I would really recommend polishing up (or completely reconstructing depending on how bad the feedback was) your legal writing sample. I might also have someone else check out your writing sample, as there is a possibility that you just clashed with the prof. If you have a good writing sample they will not hold against you as much that you received a low grade in legal writing.

If you have compelling reasons to be in Norcal, then your chances may be better. Even hella better at schools in Norcal. As far as Davis, it's pretty high, so it could be tough. Then again, you are in the top 7% of your class, so they might take you. Have you looked at yahoo transfer apps? It gave me a good idea of what to expect, but each year seems to be a little different. I wonder if more people are transferring this year, as well.
