want to make a move...but to where?!

Post by Cognoscenti » Tue May 24, 2011 2:31 pm

based on fall semester only, i have a 3.7x at a T20 school (~top 10%). i've only received 2 (out of 5) spring grades. i'm not sure how the rest will turn out but i think i'll stay where i am, more or less. it's a bit late for starting the transfer application process, but assuming i'd be able to get LORs, transcripts, etc. in on time, where should i apply?

not sure it matters but for what it's worth...i have 2 years of work experience and come from an ivy ugrad with a strong-ish lsat (168) but pretty dismal ugrad grades...

thank you for the help!

It depends how much money you have to throw around. Because transfer admissions are unpredictable, I would definitely apply to:

Harvard, Columbia, Chi, NYU, Penn, Berkeley, Michigan.

You should get into at least one of the above. If you have more money to throw in, consider adding:

Yale (if top 5%), Stanford (ditto), UVA, Northwestern, Georgetown.

This presupposes that you are apathetic as to location. For example, if you want to be/work in Chicago, of course add Northwestern to the top of your list.

Transferring to anything outside the T6 is highly questionable given top 10% at t20 pretty much gives you grade-on law review and your school will probably throw money at you to keep you there.
