Does 1L Diversity Fellowship/SA position help w/ transfer?

Post by adude » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:13 am

What's the best way to convey 1L summer experience for transfer apps? It would seem strange to put it on the resume, when you haven't begun work yet.

I think there's a general assumption that schools like to know that you're employable. It probably won't help too much though. Everyone else is doing some kind of summer work and diversity doesnt mean as much for transferring as it does for getting into your school originally.

I hope not. Getting a job that the vast majority of 1L's aren't allowed to even apply for shouldn't count as much of an accomplishment.

Easy there thriller asshat. No need to hate on diversity programs or their applicants. Especially when you have nothing substantively to add to the discussion.

OP: definitely mention it on your resume, also in any diversity statements you might be submitting with your application.

Thriller's quite hostile. Not only are those positions extremely competitive, but there are non traditionally diverse students who apply. Maybe you should be more creative...

People interested in trolling should probably think twice before posting in this thread. Folks with real answers are welcome to hang out and keep replying.

You can list it under "Summer 2011 Employment" on your resume.

I'm hating the game, not the player. And seeing as most of them specifically limit applicants to people of color, it's a little difficult to be creative with that.

They actually don't limit the applicants to people of color. That would be unconstitutional.

You can have a diverse background due to conditions growing up, it's not just based on skin color.

Since a 24-hour ban didn't convince you to drop this, you get a longer one.

The Transfers forum is NOT for discussing the merits of diversity fellowships. This is off-topic and trolling for a race debate just as much as criticizing AA does. Anyone else who continues this, whether pro or con, gets the hammer. This isn't the place to "hate the game" or even debate "the game", this is an on-topic forum and race-baiting discussions simply are not allowed.

I hope that's abundantly clear for everyone. I also hope that people can now stay on-topic and focus on giving OP the actual advice that they seek.

To OP:

Are you applying EA? Because if you're not, then you won't be applying until after you start your summer internship. (Technically I suppose you could apply before then, but transfer admissions are not rolling, so they still won't decide on it until well after you started your summer position.) I certainly put my summer work experience on mine, and I can't help but think it helped a little.

If you are applying EA and it's certain you know where you're working, you can still put it on your resume. The "Summer 2011" date will clue them in that you haven't done it yet, and you can put something like "(expected)" after the date to show that you haven't done it yet but are expecting to.

IMO, any summer employment that is clearly competitive can help a little. It won't save a bad app or poor grades, but if your overall app is good enough that they pay attention to your resume and work experience, I think it helps to have a good summer job.

In the legal world, resumes matter because it's hard to differentiate people by things like school or even grades, especially in a setting like transfers where so many applicants all have good grades. Competitive work experience can set you apart because it shows that you've already been screened by someone else and passed their test.

Based on my limited experience, diversity fellowships are often rather competitive because there aren't enough of them to fill the supply of eligible applicants, and everyone wants a paying gig 1L. Plus, it shows that you've been through the application and screening process and chosen for it. So it could help, a little.
