Re: Transfer to WUSTL at sticker or stay at mid tier 2 at 20k
How are your grades at the mid-T2? Where is it? Where do you want to practice? Usually I'd just say stay in this case, but depending on how you respond a change might make sense.

20 per year? That's a lot. I doubt you'll have a better shot at big firms than were you are now.

Depends on what the T2 is and what your goals are. Need more info.
*T2 that owns its market w/$$ > WUSTL Sticker > T2 with heavy competition in its market

Well, to be fair, the odds of getting a a job that can cover your debt from the T2 versus the odds of getting a job that covers your debt from WUSTL depends entirely on the school. A a T2 like Temple that or IUIndy that does strong in its market is a safer bet, a T2 like Loyola that gets creamed by big dogs in the same city not so much...uzpakalis wrote:my goal is to actually get a job. big law would be nice, but I know nothing is guaranteed.Flustercluck wrote:Depends on what the T2 is and what your goals are. Oh I thought you had a 20K scholarship. 20 total is cheap as hell. I'd stay.uzpakalis wrote:Top 10-12%magicman554 wrote:How are your grades at the mid-T2? Where is it? Where do you want to practice? Usually I'd just say stay in this case, but depending on how you respond a change might make sense.

It might help if you identified your current law school.

Re: Transfer to WUSTL at sticker or stay at mid tier 2 at 20k
The answer is it depends (I selected WUSTL in the poll).
20/k per year expenses or 20k/year tuition? How does your school place at the place you want to work? Does WUSTL place well in the place you want to work? Will your current school raise your scholarship due to academic performance (often will if you threaten to transfer).
Based on the lack of information available I would say go to WUSTL. However, your answers to the above questions could easily make staying at your T2 the better choice.

don't want to give the name, it's a mid tier 2.CanadianWolf wrote:It might help if you identified your current law school.
I imagine it would cost an extra 75k to attend WUSTL (if I have to pay sticker). Any possibility of merit or need based grants?
20k tuition, family pays the rest, but COL is much higher in STL so I would need to chip in/borrow. I imagine that I could negotiate more $ from current school if I had other options. WUSTL seems to own the midwest, so, that's a big plus for me.

You can't get useful advice without that information. If you'd rather PM, go for it, but otherwise you're SOLuzpakalis wrote:don't want to give the name, it's a mid tier 2.CanadianWolf wrote:It might help if you identified your current law school.

Need to know the T2, and what area you want to practice in. So far I'm 80% leaning toward stay, since being top of your class at a T2 should help you fare well @ OCI, and 20K/year isn't peanuts.

What is with so many students wanting to transfer into WUSTL lately? Aim higher or stay where you are.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the way hiring goes, but OCI is major. Many reliable sources (including lots of fellow TLSers) indicate that firms look at you as if you had not transferred. In other words, when you interview after your first year, they basically evaluate you as if they are evaluating someone from your old school with your old grades and rank. The only real exceptions are if you transferred to HYS, or maybe even CCN, because, hey, another T6 diploma on the wall never hurt any law firm.
In short, if this is just about job prospects, you should stay. Otherwise, stop being such a hermit and fork over more info.

A transfer into WUSTL (or any T30) is not going to have a significantly better shot at biglaw than a top 10% student at a T2, especially if the T2 student makes LR. You would be absorbing an additional 75K in debt for roughly similar job prospects (perhaps even worse depending on your T2).uzpakalis wrote:I would like to aim higher, but i'm trying to stay realistic. Without a sound reason, even transferring to some T14s would likely be a mistake. You're going to graduate with only about $60K in debt, which is a lot less than most people attending schools in your range, plus you have rather strong grades so you'll likely do better than most of your classmates in the job hunt.uzpakalis wrote:A lot of what I am hearing sounds like T14 or bust....
You need to know what you're doing and why you're doing it, and only then can you really weigh transferring to any school vs. staying put.
