Penn or UCLA??
So I was accepted by Penn this morning. I have already made the seat deposit at UCLA. I have until July 30th to make a deposit at Penn. I assume the responses will suggest that this is purely a where do I want to end up working decision, but I may be wrong. Also, I attended Penn as an undergrad, currently living in LA, shooting for biglaw. Is attending the same school for undergrad and law school a positive/negative/doesn't matter?
Feel free to explain your vote.
Thanks.

You are indeed mistaken. Penn places everywhere. Go to Penn.CALaw5 wrote: I assume the responses will suggest that this is purely a where do I want to end up working decision, but I may be wrong.

I've heard it is a negative for some Ma or PhD programs, but I assume it is irrelevant for law because I have never heard otherwise.CALaw5 wrote:Is attending the same school for undergrad and law school a positive/negative/doesn't matter?

Re: Penn or UCLA??
Depends, as you correctly pointed out, location is key. My Career Services Office has advised me, as I am sure you know, firms are looking for people who can demonstrate that they want to stay in an area. Thus, if you want to be in Philly, having a Penn undergrad as well as law degree pretty much is a fail-proof for demonstrating your connection to the area. Also as you predicted, I think this choice really comes down to where do you want to work? CA, I would probably go UCLA, PA/East Coast, go Penn.CALaw5 wrote:So I was accepted by Penn this morning. Both schools are very good choices, good-luck with your decision.

Your question:
Also, I attended Penn as an undergrad, currently living in LA, shooting for biglaw. Is attending the same school for undergrad and law school a positive/negative/doesn't matter?
Depends on which UG, and of course on TLS the subject of where one attended UG is highly debatable. You’ll read two conflicting opinions on TLS. Most opinions are that it doesn’t matter where you attended UG. The second (conflicting) opinion is in the TLS employment threads where you’ll read posters listing that they attended a non-prestigious UG, suggesting that in some way it does matter. The facts suggest that attending a prestigious UG may certainly help because if you research the top Vault biglaw firms, you’ll see that a very large percentage of their partners and associates attended an Ivy League UG. So in your case, having attended Penn for UG and having attended Penn for law, IMO, could certainly be positive…..
