Official UCLA 2010 Transfer Thread

Post by iheartlaw » Sat Jul 10, 2010 3:04 pm

I wanted to create a thread to centralize transfer information for UCLA. Please post acceptances/wl/rejections here along with your stats if you feel comfortable.

I will kick it off-

High T2 / Top 5% (UCLA is my top choice).

for the record, i have not received status check login info from UCLA, and don't even know if my application is complete. The only correspondence I have from them was an e-mail saying thank you for your sending an application or something along those lines. Does anyone know how to check if you are complete?

Never received a status checker info, official transcripts mailed 7/2
Accepted via phone call 7/8
E-mail notification and all that good stuff sent 7/9
Still have not received anything via snail mail

#s: Low T2 Top 5%

I have till July 15th to give a deposit, looking very likely I am going to pony up the $1000 deposit...

Good luck to those still waiting!

Accepted via phone call 7/7. Got the packet in the mail today. Top 10% and LR at an LA school in the 50s. I am waiting on some east coast schools, but I think I'll be making the deposit as well.

T50s school, top 6-7%.

Will probably also be making the deposit, but waiting on 2 other schools.

In via phone 7/8.

T2 in California, top 5%. Still waiting on Berkeley, but not holding my breath.

As I'm in NorCal, trying to decide if the Wed meeting for transfer students is worth attending. Anyone heard anything about it? The fact that it's over 4 hours makes me think they must be going over some important info.

I transferred last year and wasn't able to make it to the admitted students day, and didn't feel out of the loop at all. If it's not too much of a hastle for you to go, I'm sure it would be worth it to meet fellow transfers, etc., but they go over everything you need to know during orientation.

I am in the same situation, working and living in Norcal. I really want to make the meeting but not sure if I can. Registering for classes and knowing what I should take is stressing me out. Also, I am a bit behind on the OCI bidding game since I was attending a T2 with very little OCI. Both subjects are covered in that 4 hour power session. It seems like the later orientation session will be a bit late to help.

UCLAtransfer, you have any class selection advice? Just take whatever that tickles your interest? is there strategy in the two-wave registration system? Do classes fill up fast?

My $1000 is also due Wed, but it's not clear when the Statement of Intent to Register is also due.

I'm under review at Berkeley, and have been since 6/22. I would take Berk over UCLA but I have a feeling Berk is not going to give an answer until after they know how many spots they have after July 15th deposits.

So it is possible to deposit the 1k, not do the Intent letter until later, and then give Berk another week? I know the letter is required for OCI, but was hoping to hear from Berk, then submit the letter around 20th and do OCI.

I was also planning on calling Berk to urge a decision, not sure if you guys think this is a good idea?

Also, from http://www.law.ucla.edu/home/index.asp?page=3033

To facilitate your transition to UCLA and assist you in planning your academic curriculum at the Law School, we will hold a Transfer Welcome and Curriculum Planning Meeting on Wednesday, July 15th. Hosted by the Dean of Students, Elizabeth Cheadle, this meeting will cover multiple topics salient to your educational experience, ranging from course registration to graduation requirements, to the on-campus interview process with prospective employers and student organizations and journals, such as the Law Review. The meeting will also serve as an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow entering classmates. The following is a tentative schedule for the evening of July 15th:

Transfer Welcome Session: 4:00 p.m. - 6:30p.m. (Room 1447, Law School Building)
OCS Interviewing Meeting (open to all returning students): 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (Room 1357)
Curriculum Planning Session (open to all returning students): 7:30 p.m. (Room 1357)

I'm pretty sure the Statement of Intent to Register is due the same time as the deposit, as the website says, "You must complete all steps by the deadline."

Though, it doesn't say anything about this being binding, does it? I, too, am planning to pay the deposit, but wait on other schools before making a commitment. Bad idea if I got into another school and decided not to attend UCLA?

I am in the same boat as well. I will likely be making the deposit and proceed as if I am attending UCLA, but I am still waiting on three top 10 schools.

I was looking into the Intent to register, I could not find any language that would imply such intent is binding. In my opinion (I have no case law to back this up),honest intent to register does not mean one must register if that intent changes due to unknown circumstances after the time of statement.

If anyone has any insight to how this all works please PM me, I would love the advice.

This appears to be for last year. Since the 15th of July this year is a Thursday. For those already accepted, do you know if there is something similar being held this year and what the date is?

thx

I called, it's tomorrow. My admission email also says tomorrow, I think the website is just wrong.

I'm attending. Anyone else?

By all means, I would just take whatever interests you most. There are a few classes that are wise to get out of the way- evidence if you are planning on going into any sort of litigation, business associations, professional responsibility (since you have to take it unless you decide to write a separate ethics paper). Other than that, just take whatever sounds good.

Definitely start to think about things like whether you want to extern somewhere during the year at some point (I externed full time for a district court judge and it was amazing), and also whether you think you might want to clerk (makes classes like fed courts, con law II, admin, and evidence more of a necessity).

As for the two registration passes, it's tough to give general advice. You sort of just get a sense of what professors are most popular, and kind of know that those will fill up fast. Also, seminars, perspectives, and clinics are obviously more likely to fill up fast since some cap enrollment at 10-15 students, etc. Basically just think about it in terms of which classes you: (1) KNOW you want to take immediately (like if there is a spring class that has a prereq, etc.); and (2) classes that have a low enrollment cap.

If you have any specific questions about classes feel free to PM me and I'll see if I can get back to you in a somewhat timely manner.
