What do you think of my chances
I attend a T2, which I actually enjoy, and it looks like my final gpa will end up being a 4.2 on a 4.33 scale. Top 5% cutoff has usually been about 3.8-3.9, and the curve creates a median of B-/C+, but my school doesn't release rank until the end of summer. My grades were as follows:
Fall: A, A, A, A, B+
Spring: A, A, A, A-, B+
(Not only does year long graded legal writing suck, but curving it is statistically unsound in my opinion)
I've applied to transfer to Berkeley and Stanford. My research seems to indicate that I have a good shot at Berkeley, but I can't find much information for Stanford. My suspicion is that it's a bit of a long shot, but what does the TLS forum think?

You might want to try more than two schools. Are you set on living in northern cali?

Your grades do not equal a 4.2. And if your school curves to a B-/C+ a 3.8-3.9 should be well beyond top 5%, likely top 1 or 2 in class.nleefer wrote:I attend a T2, which I actually enjoy, and it looks like my final gpa will end up being a 4.2 on a 4.33 scale. An A = 4.33. I can only give you the information I have. The mandatory 1L curve creates a median that is either a B- (3.00) or a C+ (2.67), and in past years the top 5% cutoff has indeed been 3.8-3.9.
Also, why would I make this up if I'm seeking advice. Thanks for your input.

I have no idea why people on the internet make the things up that they do.nleefer wrote:rando wrote:Your grades do not equal a 4.2. But I have never seen a grading system like the one you describe. Somehow deflating the grading scheme, yet inflating the GPA by attributing a higher point count to each letter.
Every school I have ever heard of goes --
A+ (if they give A+'s) = 4.3/4.33
A=4.0
A-=3.7/3.67
B+=3.3/3.33
B=3.0
and so on.
Just pointing it out. Strange...or flame.

Re: What do you think of my chances
Wouldn't that make it a 4.67 scale?

Re: What do you think of my chances
relax guys. i have a feeling this person goes to my school. i go to law school up in norcal and my school gives 4.33 for A's as well. and the curves that he/she speaks of is exactly the same at my school. and rankings at my school don't come out till the end of summer either. this is not a flame.
to answer your question. yes, you have a VERY good shot at Boalt Hall. And because of our standing in the area, I say you have a 25% shot at stanford. if i were you I would also shoot out apps to CCN (50% shot) and if you are willing MVP (75%). best of luck, and congrats on impressive grades. you should know if you stay at your school you are guaranteed one of the best jobs in the area at OCI in fall, but at the same time, with those kinda grades you have the chance to move to a top school undoubtedly. not to mention acceptances at other schools can help you leverage a scholly against the university if you don't already have a full ride.

Re: What do you think of my chances
I appreciate all the input. I'm not familiar with Loyola grades, but my school doesn't use A+, so A is the highest, and is 4.33. I don't pretend to understand the reasoning behind it, it's exactly the same as having an A be 4.00 and using A+.
I agree that applying to other schools might be a good idea, but I'm rather attached to the area. I have a nice life here and don't really want to leave. The only reason I'm considering transfer at all is there are two top tier law schools right next door.

Congrats on your work paying off. From my very limited reading, while you're probably not looking at even odds on Stanford, your chances are still good enough that you'd be well advised to give it a shot.

Re: What do you think of my chances
Good shot at B, probably even to long shot at S. If your school is a higher ranked T2, I would probably amend that slightly; if it's a lower ranked, very end of the line T2, I'd seriously consider applying to more schools--H, CCN, and even MVP--if you'd be willing to go somewhere else. If expense is an issue and you aren't a VA resident, drop V. You could drop Chicago too, as they have a somewhat smaller transfer class, so odds are lower (that's why I didn't mention Yale, but if expense isn't a problem, apply there too--you really never know what will happen once you have a certain minimum set of credentials). If I were you (and I was two cycles ago), I'd apply to HSCCNMPB, at minimum. I know the expense sucks, but you don't want to wonder what if, and the transfer process is notoriously unpredictable. Like I said, I'll wager you'll get into B, but it's always good to hedge your bets. If I remember right, B's selectivity is very similar to MVP, and having at least two in that category isn't a bad way to cover your ass.

Congrats on the great grades! It sounds like you go to SCU. If so I have heard that Berkeley always takes the top people but I haven't heard of anyone getting into Standford. You should, of course, apply anyway just in case. Good luck!
