Tier 4 to IVY
I am in the top 2% of my 1L class at a T4 School. My numbers where not great in undergrad(2.5 152). I took care of my father who, at the time, had cancer and ultimately passed away my senior year. With that being said what are my chances of transferring to T14? ie. Columbia

I think you have a great shot at transferring somewhere into the T14, and likely at one of the more transfer friendly schools (Berkeley, NYU, Columbia, certainly Georgetown).APE285 wrote:I am in the top 2% of my 1L class at a T4 School. You also seem to have a great explanation for your low numbers, and perhaps an addendum would work well in your favor. Otherwise, your numbers don't make you a lock anywhere, but apply to enough schools and you should do great. Several of my transfer friends came from T3/T4's and were in the top 1-2%.
Good luck and congrats on your amazing success this 1st year!

APE, I am in a similar situation. Going to a T4 with a half-tuition scholly, but seriously considering a transfer after seeing this semester's grades.
Question: Would being in the top 5, potentially top 3 students in your class, make any other opportunities open up? T14?
It would be hard justifying a loss of scholarship to attend a school that's $40k+!

Re: Tier 4 to IVY
I agree that it depends on the T4. If the T4 is in the same market/area as a T14 school, then I think there might be a better chance of admission to that T14, but not necessarily all of them.
Completely anecdotal, but the #1 (out of approx. 200 or so) person at Whittier Law (SoCal T4) a couple years ago applied across the T14, and I know they struck out in the T14 except for Cornell.
On the other hand, I seem to recall from transferapps a Widener LS person getting into Penn a year or two ago, so it could be pretty hit or miss.

Apply to all the schools Arrow mentioned. This past year, H took 3 people from the same school ranked in the mid-60's and another person from a T3 (#1 in their class). Stranger things have happened I'm sure.

Knowing who the person you are talking about is, I want to add that he technically was tied for #1 with at least a couple other people. The school's curve only goes to a 4.0 (as oppose to a 4.3), and he had a 4.0, as do a few people at the end of every year at that t3.RonSantoRules wrote:Apply to all the schools Arrow mentioned. Re: Tier 4 to IVY
I personally know someone who transferred from Cooley to Duke! He has been my inspiration. I am peppering the top 20 with apps and also made on campus visits to a few places but I really want Columbia!! I know its a reach. But if God is with me who can be against me. I will land where I need to land even if it is not Columbia.
