Transfer Chicago-Kent to University of San Diego

Post by lgephardt » Tue Apr 27, 2010 8:40 pm

Hi,

So I am considering transferring from Kent to USD in the fall of 2010. Here is my dilemma, I am very involved and active in Kent and I feel like it might be seriously detrimental for my career pathway to move all the way across the country.

Here is my involvement in Kent:
1L --- GPA 2.975 (after 1st semester)
Co-Founder/Treasurer Trial Law Society
Active Member/Treasurer Kent Justice Society
Criminal Litigation Certificate Program (only take 15 students)
Public Interest Certificate Program
Going to take a Criminal Defense Clinic internship this summer through Kent
Possibility to intern with Kent's Center for Access to Justice and Technology for the Summer
Taking Intensive Trial Advocacy in the fall of 2010 with Judge Erickson (SUPER hard to get into)

Reasons why transfer:
Higher ranked school, more location that I want to live in post school, closer to family -- closer to boyfriend. He is going to PT school in southern CA.

Is this too big a risk -- should I just hold out for the next two years and make a decision post-graduation? I am concerned b/c I want to do prosecution and usually, in order to get into a State's Attorney's office need to intern during school.

Thoughts?

Thoughts: transfer if you want to work in Cali. Stay put if you want to work in Chicago.

I don't think you should transfer if it is not because you love your boyfriend so much and think the distance is a problem.

I believe an enjoyable and friendly environment is more important. Besides the rank difference between two isn't big. It's not like transfer from a T3 to T2. If you stay in a familiar and enjoyable environment, you will know how to take advantage of the current situation and you can continue your active involvement. It is likely to end better than that you spend a lot of engery and time to learn to respond to a new environment.

But if it is because of your relationship, you will need to think about how far you can go for this relationship.
