I somehow got 29. I want to cancel some though.

We aren't allowed to cancel of them unfortunately. I called and asked since I wanted to free up a few slots for open sign up, but couldn't. 29 is really solid. I have 28, and thats including the open sign ups from earlier.

I have 17 interviews that aren't reaches (didn't know I could have shoved all of those near 50 and got them). Should I grab whatever is left in open?

Damn, are those out of market? The only picks I got in the 35-50 range were from offices outside of NY. VERY little NYC stuff is left to pick up, though there are slots open outside of NYC with a few really good firms. I snagged SullCrom DC not too long ago, and I think there are still a few slots open.mrloblaw wrote:I have 17 interviews that aren't reaches (didn't know I could have shoved all of those near 50 and got them). Re: NYU Transfer c/o 2013
There was admittedly some hyperbole there. The interviews I got from from 35 to 50 were either NYC offices of large firms based in secondary markets or (in a couple of cases) firms that I thought would be desirable that for some reason nobody bid on.kaiser wrote:Damn, are those out of market? Re: NYU Transfer c/o 2013
Just from lottery? Damn, someone had a good strategy. I took a few more open slots and my grand total is 28, though I am meeting with 3 OCI firms on my own since I didn't end up with interviews. Not sure how many interviews I would have gotten at my old school, but it certainly wouldn't have been around 30. I just hope I don't have too many reach firm interviews.empire84 wrote:over 30...

How are you all identifying reach firms?
(Thanks, kaiser, for your earlier response to my City X, Y question. Helped me settle on an approach to bidding.)

Re: NYU Transfer c/o 2013
i know we sort of covered this at orientation, but i'm realizing i'm still confused: how should we deal with courses that have no seats available? does bidding on them at this stage do anything at all, or should we just wait until the add/drop period? and if we wait until the add/drop period, *which* add/drop period to we wait for? it doesn't seem like such a course would open up during transfer-specific add/drop since it's full of continuing students.
i'm not terribly worried, because everyone keeps saying you can sometimes show up to the first class and get the prof to let you in, but i'm just not sure what to do with my bids.
the ABRA handout is helpful, but it's not especially thorough.
oh, and thanks nyutransfer for fielding questions....

Is it more convenient to do the substantial writing in the fall or spring of 2L? For some reason I'm thinking Spring, but for no particular reason.

You can still bid on courses with no seats available because someone could drop at any point. It might not be very likely but you never know if someone else is going to change around their schedule and a seat will open. And yes, there are times that seats will become available during the first week of classes. I basically add/dropped my whole spring semester.odiero wrote:i know we sort of covered this at orientation, but i'm realizing i'm still confused: how should we deal with courses that have no seats available? does bidding on them at this stage do anything at all, or should we just wait until the add/drop period? and if we wait until the add/drop period, *which* add/drop period to we wait for? it doesn't seem like such a course would open up during transfer-specific add/drop since it's full of continuing students.

You can bid on either the transfer specific add/drop of the add/drop right before and during the first few days of classes.

Re: NYU Transfer c/o 2013
Unless you have an interest in writing a paper for a seminar that is only offered in the fall, I would recommend waiting until the spring. The transition to NYU will take some time. It's a new school plus you'll be juggling callbacks. I would try and take 12 or 13 credits in the fall and write your paper in the spring. In fact, unless you plan on using it for clerkship apps I would hold off until the fall 3L. Most people don't finish their papers during the semester they are due and so you will have it hanging over your head the whole summer which isn't so much fun. Whereas 3L hopefully you already have an offer and you can finish it over winter break.Go_to_NYU wrote:Is it more convenient to do the substantial writing in the fall or spring of 2L? 1. How long did callbacks typically take to come in? I know the schedule was a bit different last year, but I'd love to know in general whether, if you have silence for 48 hours after the interview, it is likely over for you.nyutransfer wrote:I transfered to NYU last year - let me know if you have any questions
2. Did you do the writing competition and get onto a journal? How much time were you able to dedicate to this thing? I scheduled some mass-mail interviews for Weds-Fri so I have very little time to work on it. Worried that the trash I will be submitting won't be good enough
3. When scheduling classes, would you say that two 2 credit classes is more work than one 4 credit class? I was looking to take 12 credits this semester, but I'm not sure whether it is smarter to just take three 4 credit courses, or break it up into more courses with smaller credit values

As you point out it's different this year with the weekend in the middle but the majority came within 48 hours last year for NYC firms. I did have a few that came three to four days but they were the exception.

I didn't participate because I don't want to clerk. It's not a bump for callbacks if you were already invited to LR at your old school. I wasn't asked once about it at any callback. If you want to clerk it's a good idea. That being said, if you want to be on a journal then turn it in and strategically rank your preferences. Some less prestigious journals will take you just for putting them first if you write a compelling letter of interest.3. Definitely go with 3 four credit courses. Only three finals and less credits usually doesn't mean less work in my experience.

Re: NYU Transfer c/o 2013
Then I guess tomorrow will be the day that quells or confirms my fears. If I go through tomorrow with no more callbacks from Wednesday or Thursday, then something went monumentally wrong. Problem is, I have absolutely no clue what it is. As I've said before, I'm doing the exact same thing that has been working so well for mass-mail interviews. I understand that one may screw up interviews at the beginning, but it is a much bigger problem when you can't just chalk it up to "oh well, I was just getting warmed up and hadn't hit my stride yet", since thats not the case given all the mass-mail interviews I've been on before EIW.nyutransfer wrote:kaiser wrote:1. Don't lose hope yet - there's still time. That being said, I would speak with career services about your interviews Monday morning.

So now that OCIs are over and a decent percentage of the elite firms have done callbacks, has transferring paid off for anyone careerwise?

Suppose I'm not awesome enough to get on LR, but I do get on some other journal. Should I email-update firms I haven't heard back from yet? (It sometimes takes a while to hear back from the non-NY offices I'm looking at.) Obviously, the journal would go on the updated resume I'll bring to callbacks.

How did you find out you were on a journal? I've been sitting by my email for the last several hours.

Email from secondary journal.
Kaiser, you going to contact firms to let them know you got a journal or just going to add to resume?
