People go to T14 for job prospects. In the case of OP, they can easily obtain their desired job from their current school and therefore the extra debt isn't worth it. Unless by midsized firm they mean highly selective litigation boutiqueKijiStewart wrote:Since the consensus in this thread is that intellectual fulfillment shouldn't be a factor for ANY transfer application, or general law application for that matter, (see page 1), then why do all you T10ers go to a T10. Couldn't you have gone to a regional T50 or T100 school in your desired practice region, get way more scholarship $$ and kick ass on the easier curve and have (almost) as good a shot at BL for standing out. (Presumption is if you got 165+ LSAT, your odds of finishing top 5-10% at TT are as high as top 50% at T 10).

To play devil's advocate for a second (sorry if there's more appropriate TLS jargon), are you sure about that? People get visas for all professions from second tier schools all the time. My impression is whether the FIRM wants to put in the work for you is the vital component - not the prestige of school, unless your point is that the border people who have to approve everything are more lenient to alums of prestigious schools (imo they won't even consider anything besides HYS to be so prestigious).sanzgo wrote:
plus since you're international, you're gonna need h1b sponsorship (assuming you don't have an alternative means here). michigan puts you in a better place for that.

you're right. it's the firm, not the school. but i was implying that since michigan gives you broader access to biglaw firms, which are more willing to sponsor than mid/small law firms, you indirectly have a better chance of attaining sponsorship. biglaw firms have hr departments dedicated to this type of thing and a couple thousand bucks is a drop in the bucket for them. for shitlaw, not so much.KijiStewart wrote:To play devil's advocate for a second (sorry if there's more appropriate TLS jargon), are you sure about that? Would there be a reason to attend Mich or Penn (still waiting) over Columbia (already admitted) besides arguably superior access to their own respective regional markets (ie Mich/Illinois & Philly respectively).sanzgo wrote:you're right. it's the firm, not the school. but i was implying that since michigan gives you broader access to biglaw firms, which are more willing to sponsor than mid/small law firms, you indirectly have a better chance of attaining sponsorship. biglaw firms have hr departments dedicated to this type of thing and a couple thousand bucks is a drop in the bucket for them. for shitlaw, not so much.KijiStewart wrote:To play devil's advocate for a second (sorry if there's more appropriate TLS jargon), are you sure about that? I'm tempted to agree with you, but some of the other TLS posters on other groups have made comments to the effect of "Michigan and Penn have as good OCI ops for transfers as any school" so I'm confused if that's an over-statementNebby wrote:No.KijiStewart wrote:Would there be a reason to attend Mich or Penn (still waiting) over Columbia (already admitted) besides arguably superior access to their own respective regional markets (ie Mich/Illinois & Philly respectively).sanzgo wrote:you're right. it's the firm, not the school. but i was implying that since michigan gives you broader access to biglaw firms, which are more willing to sponsor than mid/small law firms, you indirectly have a better chance of attaining sponsorship. biglaw firms have hr departments dedicated to this type of thing and a couple thousand bucks is a drop in the bucket for them. for shitlaw, not so much.KijiStewart wrote:To play devil's advocate for a second (sorry if there's more appropriate TLS jargon), are you sure about that?
