Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
Coming from a decent TT school (mid-60's), 3.0 GPA, upper half but I' am not sure what my rank is because my school hasn't released that information. In reality ill probably be ranked in the 40% area. I have a Bachelors in engineering and a Masters in the medical sciences. Im looking to transfer to FSU because I am from the area and want to end up in Florida. I also have a solid letter of rec. Im looking to transfer to FSU.
I know FSU wants you to be in the top 1/3rd and I m outside of that range but Im hoping to be admitted anyways. Also I scored a 161 on the LSAT.

- At a school ranked 40-45, trying to transfer to Fordham (29)
- GPA just above 3.0, Top 50% (although 2nd semester = 3.4)
- Interesting work experience, working at the DOJ in DC this summer
- Strong personal reasons for being in New York (My fiancee has to move there next year)
Do you think I can spin my internship, grade improvement, and legitimate reason for wanting to be in New York into an acceptance at Fordham?

Grades and rank in... GPA is 3.8x and rank is around 6% at Hofstra/SJU/BLS/Seton Hall/Rutgers...TFR wrote:Some, but not all grades back yet, but expecting (or hoping for) top 4-7%, 3.8x or so, T2. (Not expecting 1-3%, but you never know).
Applying to CLS, NYU, Penn. Deferred GULC EA.
5 Years WE (non-legal, but substantive work).
Does writing onto current school's LR make a difference for transfer admission? Why would they care?
I know it is a bit speculative without final numbers, but do you think CLS/NYU care about WE? And what was the approximate "cutoff" for T2s at your C/N?
Please rechance, my GPA looks better than rank, and CLS/NYU consistently take students from my school, hoping to have the in area boost, all apps are in (early) and pending processing. Chances?

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
Top third is probably not enough to transfer "up," but would likely allow you to transfer laterally to another T20ish school if you are interested in moving for other reasons. It's alot to give up though, becuase hopefully you have some scholarship and made LR or another journal, in which case its usually not advisable. Also, the consensus is that URM/AA does not provide a boost for transferring. Not sure the exact reasons, but two possible explanations are that (1) URM/AA get a boost during 0L admission, so getting another boost during transfer admissions is effetively doubling the boost; or (2) that Transferee schools don't care about URM/AA numbers in the transfer class because they aren't reported as part of the "Class of 201x Profile" for diversity purposes, the same way transfers don't affect a transferee school's LSAT and GPA numbers. It may not hurt to apply to GULC if you are really interested, but its not super likely.ProSe wrote:Top Third at T25 with a 3.4, Hispanic, Working for a Federal Judge this summer.... looking to transfer to GULC, Penn, Duke, UVa (I figure only GULC is at all possible). If you are at a similarly ranked school, you have a chance, assuming it is a lateral move and not 'up' too far. Highlight ties, residency, and the fact that you want to work and live in FL in your PS.Gatorbull84 wrote:Coming from a decent TT school (mid-60's), 3.0 GPA, upper half but I' am not sure what my rank is because my school hasn't released that information. Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
If you are at Brooklyn, you are probably within range. My C/N took several (5?) people from BLS, all of whom where in the general top 5% range, but not necissarily tip-top of the class, as was the case with other TT/TTT in the area (Seton Hall/Hofstra/NYLS). My C/N in general took only 1 or so from each of those, but drew several from BLS.TFR wrote:Grades and rank in... I don't know, but its a long shot. Also, be warry of Fordham's OCI policy for transfers. The word on the street is that you are not allowed to participate. If you REALLY need to be in NY, you might want to consider Dozo, which would be a lateral and more likely given your rank.tryingtotransfer wrote:- At a school ranked 40-45, trying to transfer to Fordham (29)

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
Thanks for helping out. I'm deciding whether to transfer. I am #1 at a regional school in my home market ranked between somewhere 50-70. I have 5 book awards, and am working for what would be considered a large firm in one of my home markets. I am on a full tuition scholarship, but still have to take out some loans to pay to live. Not much work experience.
How high could I look? And is the extra $80k worth a transfer if I am not sure I want NYC big law?

I'm curious what the people think.
#2 at WUSTL (for those who know me on here, sorry for my lack of discretion). Applying to YH. Not really interested in SCCN. My current thought is that I've got a great shot at H and Y probably won't happen.
My big concern is my second semester grades. They were downright mediocre. Because of our crazy numbered grades, though, I was able to hold on to #2 because of the strength of my first semester. Think schools will look at the overall rank/GPA or focus on my slide second semester?

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
If you want to work in your live and work in your market, it's not worth transferring. I immagine that most attorneys in your area are from that school, and will like that connection. If you transfer to a big NYC T6 school and come back, you might be viewed as some kind of elitist who thought he was too good for Home Town Law School. Plus, your loans will probably increase by more than 80 if you are on full scholarship (C/N tuition is about $50k per year, plus living exp. will be more)sportsguy wrote:Thanks for helping out. IF you want NYC biglaw, or academia, or biggov, or to work in europe or asia or south america or DC or chicago etc etc, you have a good shot at CCN, and are competitive but not likely at H. One of CCN = 50%+, H = 30%.
The question the judge who I sought for counsel about transferring put it to me this way: do you want to be a big fish in a small pond (your current LS and home market, where you can make a nice living and be connected with people in your community), or do you want to be a small fish the big pond of NYC biglaw or DC or wherever you go if you transfer?

I'm going to assume either your LS is in CA or you are a CA resident.
Berkley = 45%
UCLA/USC = 75%
C/N = 40%
M = 45%
G = 75%

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
They will consider overall. almost everyone has one semester stronger than the other. It's not the same as in UG where they might consider an upward trend. It's year-end rankings; that's what schools look at and that's what employers consider at OCI.TatteredDignity wrote:I'm curious what the people think.

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
It depends on the schools. Generally, it follows a reverse-ranking schedule, such that GULC is usually the first to come out with RD acceptances (mid-June?) - also they want your money because they know several people will get into some T10 later in June or July, and they want you to pay them $1000 to hold your seat and will not delay it until you find out from the other schools you apply. It's a racket and makes them look like GeorgeTTTown.jarofsoup wrote:How long does it hear back from these schools usually?
Other T10s will typically be in later June, and in July. Usually H is the last (not familiar with S and Y) in mid to late July. So it looks kind of like this:
GULC - Mid June
T14s/T10s - late june/early july
CN - mid July
H - Late July
(I think S and Y are quite late too. Also I don't know much about non-T14 schools).
Most schools will release decisions in waves. The first wave is the biggest - I would guess over 50% of acceptances go out in the first batch. If you don't hear, don't despair! They will reconsider the next group based on who accepts, etc. It's obviously best to be in the first batch, which is why it's important to get your stuff in early, but you're always in the running until you are rejected.

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
My preferences so far in order: UCLA(anecdotal the top 15% gets in... I searched the blogs on TLS), Northwestern(expecting a reject), GULC, USC, GWU. Top 15% at a tier 2 in CA. I do not know if it really worth my time to apply to a school like Hastings b/c it is fairing far below GWU. All my apps are in now it is just the waiting gameVronsky wrote:It depends on the schools. Vronksy did you transfer??? Any tips for OCI bidding. I was told to bid most heavily on employers that recruit from your old school.

Re: What are your chances? I'll chance you
I did. there are transfers at my current C/N at firms spread out from Cravath to Cahill, with many in the V10. No firm is really untouchable besides Wachtell, Williams & Connolly, and some super selective lit boutiques. You definitely don't need to limit yourself to firms that recruited at your previous school. Basically you can consider your options at your transferee school as though you were about top 1/3rd, but not LR. It might actually hurt you to bid firms from your old school, because chances are they target median-ish students at your new school, and it will be difficult to get interviews/callbacks/offers because of the high number of applicants and low number of spots available at this mid-V100 firms.
Bidding is a whole delicate concept that I'll try to address later on, probably in a different thread.
